I've always used a 1"X30" belt sander. It's like everything you learn. Once you get onto it it's easy. The best
belt I ever found was a linen belt. It turned the ferrule down easily and if you taped the hosel and shaft it
left no marks. I then used strips cut out of Bounty (it had to be Bounty) paper towels soaked with acetone
and spun the club against it. If I was really being picky I'd finish it off with a felt belt and glanz wachs. Sadly,
by the time I quit making clubs I could no longer find either linen belts or felt belts.

Last time I did ferrules,I wrapped a piece of sandpaper around it and spun the shaft using my hand in a rolling motion with the shaft on my leg. Also how I've polished the ferrule with acetone and paper towel.

James @customgolfcenter showed me his way. He gets a good white cloth a good bit saturated with acetone. Place the cloth in the palm and fingers, place the club into it and use your hand lasso-style to spin the club. Hope that makes sense.

It works but there is a learning curve.

I had a decent Chinese 1 x 42 belt sander that I used until I moved and sold it. It was belt drive so I changed pulleys to gear it slower, which was a lot better for ferrule turning. I used the special blue belt which made it almost idiot proof.

Now I am reduced to doing the hand type work. I was thinking of getting the cheap Harbor Freight 1 x 30 but I am sure it will be spinning twice as fast. Anyone think that matters?

I think you can find a 1" x 42" at Harbor Freight or some such tool supply for not a lot of $$$. I would get the 1" x42" with Durabrite over any other way if you do a modicum of work.

By hand with acetone is fine if you do very lil work. Folks shouldn't be using acetone wily nily.

I do more club work than a "little" but I almost never need to turn ferrules. I buy the ones that fit.
