Our local utility company also does cable, internet and phone. They rent modems or let you use yours. For those who like to buy their own they recommend the Arris (Motorola) Surfboard SB6190. One of their techs came by to check our signal and said our cable modem was ok but recommended upgrading the router. We had a Lynksys with no external antennae. He recommended getting one with external antennae. I asked about the combo router/modems and he recommended not using them. I got a new Netgear router from Walmart and haven't had an issue in a long time. If you get your own modem you might have to call your ISP and give them the new number on the router.

Working from memory but I think Verizon (for example) had a list of modems and/routers that worked with Verizon's system. You needed a splitter for the modem because you needed their modem (terminal??) for the Verizon IP phone & 1 modem (yours) to use for data. I avoided the combo modem/router because I wanted to make sure I had adequate range &
reliable internet speed for streaming.

Lots of reasons to still have a landline. I don't keep my cell phone lashed to my body 24/7 like most seem to do day. When I am home it goes into the charging cradle on my desk in the basement. I can hear a landline call anywhere in my house with phones everywhere. I can forward cell calls to the landline and vice versa. And the biggest reason I have a landline is that my 73 year old wife has a cell phone but hates it and SHE WANTS A LANDLINE. It is bundled into our cable, wifi, utility bill and is dirt cheap.

99% of all call attempts I receive are automatically rejected by my app since they are either scammers, spammers, ID spoofers, fundraisers, politicians, etc. Basically the only people that CAN call me are family, friends, and companies I actually have business with. Even then 99% of those "conversations" are either a) text messages, or b) VIDEO calls. What is the point of an audio-only call in 2023 when there is the option for video, or the convenience (to the recipient) of text message?

Upgraded to an Arris SVG2482 about two years ago when I needed to add VOIP capability - and had zero issues setting it up, or keeping the network up since. Sure, I would have liked to pay less (even though partially reimbursed by work) but I’ve had no issues with performance.
