Also if the shooter is going to fall down drunk he wants his clubs to go down with him.

Is this even worth spending the time for them to make a rule on? Right up there with the whole anchoring ban. "Golf" needs to stop worrying about such meaningless issues.

bad9 This is actually an extension of what was commonplace on the LPGA Tour. When caddies would line up their player from behind until the very last second and step off the intended line of flight.

I've seen one guy at my club use one, but I think he gave it up by the end of this year. I think he said his dad was using one. I tried his on the practice green and I actually liked the putter, but I didn't see the point of lining up the putter and then backing away letting it sit there. Once you pick it back up you could still get offline.

I used a stand up putter for a while, didn't see much advantage to it.

It won't matter until it does, i.e. top guys using it, so in that regard who cares, but I see why the USGA addresses it as who would have thought - anchor, long putter, belly putter, arm lock, side saddle, please add to the list🤔. They don't have the balls to enforce the anchor rule but at least have some ability to say what you can and cannot anchor with/equipment! F,s I don't give about a standing putter until some asshat is holding up the show while doing it....happy Friday 🙃

The only problem I can see here is if someone else lines up your putter for you. And if the putter being aligned is no good then I would think you'd need to outlaw a line being on the ball.

I've tried the standing putter and a line on the ball and neither one worked well for me. Now the anchored belly putter was another story; I definitely putted better from short range with that.

I made something once, maybe it was the Ping Doc long putter head on a regular length shaft. Anyway I made something that would stand by itself. Trying to stand it to preset the aim was a waste of time for me.

Never tried one, but from the physics perspective I would hazard a guess that it would me impossslble to alter the weight distribution of a club enough to make it stand on its own and not have said weight distribution alter the way rhe putter swings.
Like almost everything else in physics, the advantage of lining it up is probably exactly equally offset by the disadvantage of that weight distribution when actually putting the ball.
