Cross Handed Putting / Left Hand Low

I putted poorly this season, and esp. the last several rounds I played I was averaging 33-34-35 putts per round.
After using the same putter (an old Rossie II) for 3-4 years, I began switching and trying different putters from my
motley collection (nothing fancy or expensive, LOL). So, I've decided to try Cross-handed or Left Hand Low
over the winter to see if I can become more consistent, esp. with the 3-4-5-6 footers (you know....the ones
you HAVE TO MAKE!!

Does anybody here use Left-Hand-Low? If so, any tips or advice? Any things to avoid doing? I putted
so poorly that I'm ready to try something new and different!!!

I’m a left hand low putter. Been doing it for 17 years. It becomes almost automatic with short putts. When I switched, during a bad winter, I spent an enormous amount of time working on lag putting at an indoor place. I think if you commit to it, you will need to do that. That way you gain the feel and confidence there where it’s needed. I have experimented with numerous styles of putters while using it. LHL favors heavier weighted putters, particularly mallets rather than blade styles. Larger than stock size grip to relax the hands in a 10 finger. Learn to rock those shoulders with a straight back and through stroke.

Do either of you overlap with the finger(s) of either hand?
Do you start the stroke with a forward press?
I've been practicing a little by extending the index finger of my left hand down the shaft and
imagining that I use that finger to push the putter head straight back away from the ball.....good idea? Not?

It's all I've ever used. It's the only way that seems instinctive to me. I switched 2 years ago to super stroke 3.0 grips and that seems to work well. I align my thumbs on the top of the grip on the flat edge.

fatshot I do interlock the index finger of my right hand between the ring finger and pinky of my left. Forward press? Maybe a bit. I don't really feel like it too much. Other than that I would say play around with it this winter (if you live in the north. Try to find what feels as natural as possible. That's my take on it. I do think that this style of putting works well with a center shafted model.

Thanks.....That's my plan! I agree....I've been looking for a center shafted putter that suits my eye....

I changed to left hand low over 20 years ago and haven’t changed since. It’s leveling of the shoulders was one of the benefits. Just grip it so it feels comfy without weirdness.

By the way, center shafted is not going to be relevant to left hand low. Blade, etc. depends upon your swing arc mostly. Check PING putter info for details on putting arc. Good luck….. and stick with it awhile to give it a chance. 😎

I haven’t putted good for awhile myself. I tried left hand low before, but never stuck with it. Need to give it a try again. And give it more time.

I think it was Gary Player who said if he were to teach a new golfer he teach them left hand low putting.

Get a broomstick . It takes a while to get used to it but I had 26 putts last week.

I used it for a few seasons, but I would putt traditionally from long range for the speed control. I felt this worked better but the pro pushed me to pick just one method and I just couldn't get the speed from long range. That was on slower public greens though and now I'm at a course with faster greens. I still think about using both methods again as I felt LHL was better for those 4-6 footers.

That's my plan as well.....use LHL from about 10 feet or less. Those are the ones that drive me crazy!

That was my pain too. I would tend to pull the shorter putts and after a few pulls then I would push one and so on.

The pro didn't like the idea of using 2 putting styles. Still not sure I agree with him, but to his credit he did help me putt a lot better. He got me to use a better routine and he gave me some practice drills that helped a lot. For me the best drill is just pushing the ball to the hole. I'm much better than I was, but I still feel like I hit my line a bit better with LHL.

I tried it just to see how it felt. Didn’t feel overly weird. Probably easy to get used to. Just something I deem as “In case of Emergency, Break Glass”. Don’t need to use it, hope I never get to the point where I have to go to it but it’s not something hard to get used to…. Especially if you putt like crap the other way.

I have only toyed with it. It seems great on short putts. If I ever did it, I would probably stick with conventional style at longer lengths. I don't see any real problem with having two styles because lagging has a different main goal.

DonM I’d have to go all in… I’d be questioning the left hand low cutoff distance if i missed one. It’s like the people who buy a chipper and end up inching back and back and back until they are hitting 3/4 chipper from 75 yards😂.
