rsvman2 How is this ok but LIV golf is not?
It is not ok (unless you're Qatari or one of the bribed board members), but it is quite different.
The World Cup is a long established event that has not changed, only its location. A new event or league was not launched.
Although a little over a year ago something similar to LIV was attempted in football/soccer. The 'Super League' was an attempted money grab by the world's top clubs. It wasn't oil money, but the rich wanting to get richer across all nationalities. It was met with public disdain, law suits, etc. It was abandoned due to the response; and the fact that FIFA, UEFA, etc. wield more power and influence over their tournaments than the PGA Tour does over theirs.
I don't need to go into why Qatar was a disaster of a choice, and why it happened anyway - its quite well documented.
I can only hope that the response will change FIFA and how it awards World Cup host locations.
Personal opinion, I think our 2026 bid was a mess as well - all to be politically palpable. Having matches in three countries across a land mass the size of North America? How can fans afford to enjoy it all? How can you create the proper atmosphere? I've long been in favor of having certain areas or states host it. We have enough infrastructure to host the entire event in the Northeast, or Florida, or Texas, or California.
