Component wise Maltby has some great options in wedges. Whatever your skill or lack there of, they’ve got a wedge head for you.

I have a set of Callaway PM grind wedges and that’s it. Too many bounce and grind options for 99% of the people out there. I think people are worse with wedges now than before Vokey came along. “Wedges based on conditions”…. Please… “are you a digger or a sweeper.”….🙄 a lot of people are both, the first one from 50 yards they dig, goes 5 yards, next one they skull/sweep and goes 80 yards.

Seems most people were better off when oems offered “set wedges”. You bought 4-SW…. Same shaft, flex and weight. There was no grind to pick, no bounce number… Just easy to use.

Too much now for the common hack to choose from

I have a set of Firesole copies from about 20 yrs. ago. The irons have always played great, even played them a couple rounds this season. They have a SW in the set and it has been the best damn wedge I've ever had. I used to carry it all the time, but got away from it this year. Only wedge I could take a full swing with, with confidence & it would not end up 120 yds. on another hole. And it will just drop/stop. Had so many kickins from using it, I wonder why it's not still in the bag every round. And, I laugh when I look at the face, with the grooves beat down, dead center.

Yes, too hard today to pick the sole/grind that a person really needs/should have. If in fact, a person actually needs any of that nonsense. I think that is the reason so many have a hard time with wedges. Just grab a nice CB wedge and go, no special 'grind', no special sole. We are not Pros. And never will be. I know that is a shocking statement for some to be reading, sorry......but we suck with a 'special' wedge. 🤣

Typhoon All cycles back around to strengthening lofts. In the old days there was no need for a 'gap wedge' because there was no gap in the set.

Now I make my GW-SW-LW from simple 'no special grind' components with the same shaft, flex and swingweight. Just changed the lofts of the GW and SW to have the same gapping as in my irons; LW I rarely use full swing.

I say it during my fittings all the time.

I always get people to buy the “A” wedge and if it’s the Stealth irons I have them go all the way to LW.

rsvman2 Strengthening the loft was all part of the equation for the evolution of easier to hit, more forgiving irons.

Typhoon Makes sense does it not? Why try to learn how to hit an iron with a different sole than you have on your others? And most of them have sharp leading edges.....for that 120 yd. shot from 40 yds. away. People really need to quit trying to copy the Pros. Unless they are going to practice for a few hours every day.
When you see a Tour Pro skulling a wedge....ya just gotta have a headslap seeing that happen to them, what with all their practice.

Spot on. My old Ping Eye2, the SW and LW blended seamlessly into the set. Never even knew what bounce and grind was, the shit just worked and you never thought about it. And like you said about people and pros… I hit ALL my clubs for full shots…. Why wouldn’t you?? Unless you listen to the pros but they don’t hit anything 100% anyway. The LW is the only one I’ll take and sit it down to see if I like how it opens up with the leading edge.

Wedges I look at now are standard bounce and grind basically.

All us folks with Cavity Back Wedges are not those "People", I don't see any pros with CBX2 wedges I play. 😉

That was always my choice in clubs be it Oem or component. The wedges always seemed to set up better to my eye when they all looked similar. All of the remaining sets I have have set wedges, even the full hybrid sets.

The bigger wedges always look better to me, but every time I try one it just doesn't work well. I can't get the larger higher bounce ones through the thick rough. Its the same for me with irons. I like a Ping G type off the tee, but I can't hit it as well otherwise.

Wedges are my favorites, and perhaps the only club I don't search for alternatives to what I already have. Never paid attention to grind or bounce and it never mattered to me whether it was a cavity back or not. Only met one I didn't like. After replacing my trusty worn out sand wedge I needed a gap wedge and went out and bought a Cleveland 50 degree wedge (don't remember the model, but this would've been around 2008) and I could not hit that thing consistently from one shot to the next for reasons I never understood. I'd probably love the Wishons, but I'm set with my DTG wedges (at least until I misplace one 😦).

I have 2 set wedges, both gap and a stand alone SW....how's that for strong lofts🙃

And the stand alone might get us back on topic😉....a Wishon PCF Micro Pro.
