I was lucky. Registered for the draft when I turned 18 in 1973. The war was winding down at that time. I’ve known several guys who were there.
One being a golf buddy that played in our senior mens quota group for several years. He was there in 1968.
He was reading a map and got hit with shrapnel. I asked him some questions after seeing Ken Burn’s excellent documentary on the Vietnam War a few years ago.
Burn’s documentary showed for me just how thick the jungle was where a lot of the fighting took place. And how up close the man to man fighting was.
My golf buddy’s company supported General Tommy Franks company in Vietnam. They didn’t know each other then and Franks (obviously) wasn’t a General then.
Years later when Frank’s was the Commander at MacDill AFB in Tampa a mutual friend brought my golf buddy in to see Franks.
Pretty cool how they got to meet each other ~ 40 years later and reminisce of their intertwined experience there.
