2014 iron vs 2022 iron

So here’s what I did so the “loft jacking” people don’t bitch.

2014 Ping ie-1 6 iron 29 degrees with a modus 105 stiff vs. 2022 TM p790 7 iron 30.5 degrees, same shaft. ( the Ping 7 iron would have been 32 degrees).
I did this on the GC Quad using the same ball too.
Ping Ball speed 116 TM 120
Ping launch 20.5 TM 16.5
Ping spin 4500 TM 4350
Ping peak height 34 yards TM 30
Ping decent angle 47 degrees TM 44
Ping carry 170 TM carry 179

This shows me how much faster the faces are now and how spin is a bit more controlled. Balls holds the green fine with the TM, more stop and drop with the Ping but into the wind with that height its a killer. Good comparison to show that almost 10 years of tech has much more in it than loft differences.

Get a 2013 Rocketbladez 7i and compare with that P790.

Par4QC Hahaha… the numbers don’t lie… I can hit a Cally Apex iron the same as the TM. If you want I can hit that tomorrow instead but it has a xp95 shaft in it. Our pro at indoor golf has em😁.

Also, the Rocketbladez iron was a game improvement iron, not the same class as the p790 even though the lofts on the 6 and 7 irons are also most the same. I’d compare the standard Rocketbladez to the Stealth as far as what kind of player it’s for. The Rocketbladez Tour are like the p770 loft wise. But still, it’s not just loft… faces are faster and designed better than 10 years ago.

Typhoon faces are faster and designed better than 10 years ago.

It all comes down to 'who' hit the ball.
I could play Acer Tour Blades equally as well as I could play the 790s. And vice versa. In fact, I've had 790s and Stealths. I have the Acers in the bag. Well, did. Now I have (brand new) Adams Idea ProA12s. 😁

I could probably count on 1-2 fingers, the number of players here that are interested in any of the numbers you posted. Totally irrelevant to our games. And if we want the 790s, we will certainly buy them regardless of any numbers, except on the soles.

I think you're 100% correct. Irons have seen the biggest gains in distance imo. And you're right it's more than jacking lofts. They've been able to thin faces and get the center of gravity lower etc..

Woods are a different story for me anyway. When I got back into golf 22 years ago I played Cobra offset drivers that went as far as my Pings do today. Same with fairway woods. My swing speed (~ 90 mph) might be down a hair, but not much.

MOI has gotten better, but solid strikes went the same. The best fairways woods I ever played were both the 2003 Cobra SS fairway woods offset model and non offset model. Wasted a lot of money over the years chasing the performance of those. lol

All that said, I'd shoot the same scores with the clubs I had 20 years ago. I think over the years many of us have spent a small fortune needlessly.

Funny, but the last car payment I had was close to 50 years ago for my brand new 1973 Mustang. Ever since that car we pay cash and buy inexpensive cars and keep them a long time. I'm driving a 2008 Hyundai with 75,000 miles right now.

I wish I had the same discipline for buying golf clubs the last 20 years as I do cars. lol That said at 67 I have no plans to buy anymore clubs. lol

Shot my best round ever ~ 10 years ago (par 71 at Fox Hollow) with whatever Cobra driver, fairways woods and hybrids were out then and Ping G15 irons. Recently shot a 1 over par 72 with my TM's.

Still have the Ping G15 irons and could put them in the bag tomorrow and not miss a beat score wise.
Of course the Ping 'tools' will have a different number on the bottom than the TM 'tools'. lol

Typhoon That's all well and good, I guess, if you are into numbers and how things are changing. But, even with all that 'modern tech' built into the clubs, a person still has to swing them. A person. And that person wants to hit a shot that is 140 yds.. So that person will pull a club that they hope will go that distance for them. Maybe 25 years ago it was a 7i. Today it may be a 9i. What has been gained for that person? They still hit 'a club' 140.
And you are reading here on this forum where people are having troubles with hitting these new clubs, or do you not see that in their posts? Having trouble hitting a 9i now..........because the shaft is 1" shorter perhaps, and head weight is lighter (much lighter)???

Check out the lofts on the Tour Blades vs. the lofts of the 790s. Why can I play the Tour Blades better than the TM irons???? And, I can still hit 140. With 1 of them. (well, maybe)😉

Just saying, all the tech is lost on me. And quite certain many others. But, I don't sell new equipment for a living, and do understand all the marketing. If they leave things alone, just 'make clubs', they will still sell clubs. That is a given. No need to try to 'improve' everything every year. Save all that R&D money; it is wasted on a shit ton of players. Look out the window....you see what I mean.

I’m more accurate because, hey looking at shaft length, who doesn’t want to hit a 7 iron into a green vs. a 5 iron. I used to strive for 14 GIR. Now a lot of the times I’m hitting all 18. As for a driver, I always played 46” so if I go back to an older driver I see gains in distance because of spin being better for me with the newer heads. Cor is the same, moi is better but I seem to be as accurate then as I am now.

All of my current clubs are the best I've ever owned, no doubt about it, for me. I would have loved to have been able to play them 20 years ago, although with stouter shafts.

hahaha... bunch of Clint Eastwoods here! I'm not trying to sell clubs, ( can't even afford them and I work for a club company) Since its a golf forum I just think its nice if people learned things and didn't stick to the old crotchety get off my lawn/loft jacking way of thinking. I don't give a shit what anybody plays but being enlightened to what's really going on with equipment gives the illusion that know something.

I get everything you are saying and the golf industry is saying. The lofts are jacked, yes, but the have design enhancement that makes the faces faster and the COG in the right spot for launch that mimicks the weaker lofts. I just poo-poo it because it doesn't transfer to my swing and swing speed. I get a lot of satisfaction out of playing the classics. I do take full advantage of modern driver, FW and hybrid technology. I just prefer the older stuff down in the scoring/control clubs.

I agree they can do a lot more with the multi-piece multi-material irons as far as positioning the CoG and having a higher COR more forgiving face. That said a badly swung P790 won't put you in a better place than the same badly swung Eye2. It's the toe shot or slightly thin shot that you can still get on the green with.

My P770 irons look about the same size as my Apex Pro 16, but they are noticeably more forgiving. For some reason I did not hit the P790 as well, but the new ones were not out yet and the older model was sold out except for demos back then.

You can't argue with the physics. Off a hitting robot, the results don't lie. Scientists and engineers will find a way to make the ball go faster and higher off the face of a club. What I balk at, is the marketing of selling distance. Moire distance is not necessarily a way to play better golf.
