So here’s what I did so the “loft jacking” people don’t bitch. 2014 Ping ie-1 6 iron 29 degrees with a modus 105 stiff vs. 2022 TM p790 7 iron 30.5 degrees...

I agree they can do a lot more with the multi-piece multi-material irons as far as positioning the CoG and having a higher COR more forgiving face. That said a badly swung P790 won't put you in a better place than the same badly swung Eye2. It's the toe shot or slightly thin shot that you can still get on the green with.

My P770 irons look about the same size as my Apex Pro 16, but they are noticeably more forgiving. For some reason I did not hit the P790 as well, but the new ones were not out yet and the older model was sold out except for demos back then.

IMO, they compared the wrong drivers for that era. Try an R510 TP against the Stealth...different story.
And, I've hit both and the R510TP was much more accurate for me. The Stealth was possibly a bit longer.
...Maybe.

Eguller there’s a number of years between the burner and the 510. The 510 is a cult favorite for a reason, but still not upto today’s tech in forgiveness by a long shot.

You can't argue with the physics. Off a hitting robot, the results don't lie. Scientists and engineers will find a way to make the ball go faster and higher off the face of a club. What I balk at, is the marketing of selling distance. Moire distance is not necessarily a way to play better golf.

Distance and accuracy is what people have to keep in mind... and they don't. Everyone wants 17 more yards and the extra yards come from higher moi/ better accuracy. Nobody looks at the total tech that goes into the distance. Robot hits don't lie, true. But you put a human on Trackman or a GCQuad and the numbers don't lie either. The only way people can make an educated statement is by having quantifiable results.

I tend to look at this as more distance = more opportunities, but greater risk - putting more speed into the ball gives the potential for shorter/easier approach shots, but also makes a bad result from an offline or mishit shot more likely.

There is another way to make an educated statement, John. Take the clubs to the golf course and measure the results where they really count. The quantifiable results don't always xfer to the real world.

I guess i just don't want to spend money on new clubs. I'd rather spend it playing golf with my old clubs.
I am a 12-ish handicapper and the last nine holes I played I hit the last 7 straight greens in regulation and gave myself five looks at birdie inside of 18 feet. New irons aren't going to improve on that, no matter what the numbers on Trackman say. In fact, I would likely score worse, at least for a few rounds, while I adjusted to the new distances, etc.
I don't doubt that new clubs are better. I just don't know that they are better enough for ME to justify the expense. I am enjoying playing with the crappy old clubs I have, and I break 80 pretty often with them, and that is enough for me.

Great way to say what I've kinda been saying. If the title of this thread was "2014 iron vs 2022 iron on Trackman" then it's a different discussion. "Better" on Trackman doesn't necessarily mean "better" on the golf course.

rsvman2 Again, I don’t care what you guys hit. Purpose was for you people to see the new clubs are not just about lower lofts…. There is more to it. That’s why I hit 2 clubs, same loft, different numbers on the sole and posted numbers so you could see ball speed differences etc…. I know 99% of the people here avoid any type of tech to see numbers so I thought it would be educational for you all to see them without having to go near a launch monitor

You do realize I take Trackman outside with me right?🙄. You guys are Afraid to see what the numbers actually are… that was the point of the post… so you guys who poo poo people hitting shorter irons into greens by only saying “loft jacking” can see that there is more to it than that.

Outside or inside, it's still just numbers. The game changes when you're playing golf. I'm 125 yards out and now I have my new club that is 2 clubs longer than my old club and I push it right into the pond. Damn, should have kept my Eye 2s in the bag. 🤣

I'm not sure anyone is afraid if the truth. I've owned enough modern irons to believe they go farther and just as high. I think what's really going on is a lot of us don't really care that it's true. They're stupid expensive and probably won't change our scores. What's the point?

Typhoon I'm looking forward to being able to get on a launch monitor, I'd love to see what numbers I get with a few clubs. My coach said he has a GC3 that he'll get me on in my next lesson, I really just want to get on the range again before then. He also told me that I need to work on the mental side on my game, that hitting balls on the range is great and easy, there is just no free do over on the course... So I gotta work on decreasing the nerves on the 1st few holes....

I have found over time, that for me, as long as I get my lies bent to my flat specs, it makes no difference what the head is. The biggest concern for me is the correct soft steel that allows that to happen. I also like to do my own.
None of these flex face distance irons qualify, as well as most OEM stuff.
Those that do qualify, are likely so expensive that the actual improvements over my older stuff result in negative value.
An upgrade in shafts, not heads, is the way to go, imo.

You don’t go to range and practice so with all the different clubs you just take out on the course it’s gonna be a guessing game. That fact that you shoot as well as you do is amazing!

I go to the range, practice and I know how far I hit it. I use the LM to check height, launch and decent angle. The numbers tell you what the ball is doing and then I can tell what I need to work on if I choose to. You should disregard that last sentence 😁. There’s no guessing when I play, unless it’s windy. If I had a new club that was 2 clubs longer, I’d have already practiced with these clubs so I know my yardages before going out to play.

Spuzz The Maltby TS1 and 2 are soft and easy to bend, if you ever feel like trying some new tech ones.

Ok🙄… so do you guys still think that the only reason a 30 lofted 6 iron from 2014 for shorter than a 30 degree 7 iron from 2022 is loft?

Nope. There's a lot more going on than just jacking lofts. Lots more. The new irons have all the tech advancement that was discovered in driver evolution.
