Horror Movies watched this month

I enjoy the volume of horror movies that television makes available every October these days. So far I've watched Jeepers Creepers for the first time, and The Fog - which I've seen before.

Jeepers Creepers is definitely creepy. Rather poorly acted almost all the way around, but still a compelling watch if you're not too turned off by the gore. The demon creature drew me in better than most. The Fog is almost the opposite. Not the most compelling tale, but mostly well acted with well known stars and directed by John Carpenter. Definitely not as good as Halloween before it, or The Thing, which came after, but still worth watching for me. Have The Brood, which I haven't seen, and The Howling, which I saw on release in the 80's, recorded and ready to watch when I have time. Also have a bunch of classics recorded on the DVR that played on TCM but I didn't have time to watch yet: Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70's version), and Phantom of the Opera. Wife actually wants to go see Halloween Ends in the theater, which is strange since she hates Halloween and generally hates horror movies, so I may see that soon as well.

😄jmo, but I think you can leave this descriptive phrase out, any time you discuss horror movies. To me, they are more of a comedy, even when not intended.

Par4QC Generally true. Some, like The Exorcist, The Silence of the Lambs, or Jaws are exceptions, but most off-the-shelf horror movies don't have the greatest casting or production values. I'm drawn to them almost like junk food though.

Same here.
Some of the best horror/comedies are intentional. That actually takes real acting, imo.
American Werewolf in London is a real good example of a semi-serious horror/comedy, with top notch special effects.
The Living Dead sequels are an example of the cheesy kind of horror/comedy, with low budget effects.

johnnydoom I'm not sure I'd characterize SofL and Jaws as horrors, but I guess they are in their own way. As for the Exorcist, I love that movie. I can remember the controversy and response when it came out. Quite the shocker at that time. But I've seen it now about 50 times and it is a great movie. I was an usher throughout high school, so I've seen a lot of movies multiple times. The more popular the movie, the longer it stuck around, and the more times I saw it. I've seen Coal Miner's Daughter over a hundred times and it's still my favorite movie. (Don't even ask me how many times I've seen The Sound of Music!).

It was a laugh when all of us ushers were out partying. All night long we'd be talking using lines out of movies, often not even knowing we were doing it. Many times I pulled the line out of the Exorcist, "The power of Christ compels you!," and, if time and the situation allow warranted it, I'll follow up with the one of the final lines in that scene, "God the holy spirit commands you!" Sometimes this line would be pulled out at the stupidest times: "Can I take this putt?" "Can you? You must! The power of Christ compels you!" While this was always fun with my usher friends, it has caused some confusion over the years, like the time my elderly mom asked if she could have another helping of something at dinner when she was visiting. LOL

Spuzz I laughed at things a person should absolutely not find entertaining when I watched Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. If you've seen a few slasher movies, this one, IMO, is a better parody of them than Scream. Same with the Sam Raimi Evil Dead movies.

My wife watched Hocus Pocus 2, so I ~~had to~~ did as well. It was definitely a horror.

The Brood is a strange and disturbing movie that I’m pretty sure I didn’t like. Chronenberg has made a couple of movies I liked, and a lot more that I haven’t.

The only horror movie that still gives me the creeps, even after having watched it countless times,
is The Shining. The Exorcist and Amityville (original) round out the top-3.

My buddies worked at a drive in. I used to go with them and watch movies for free.
I watched the Exorcist through the back window of the car one time, while the girlfriend watched some chick flick through the front window.
I didn't need the volume on to watch that movie back then. Had seen it enough to know what was going on. lol

I don't watch much horror anymore but when I do I like movies with an actual monster, space alien, werewolf as opposed to movies like The Hills Have Eyes or Hostel with normal(?) people doing the killing and just torture and stuff. Just seems too real and life has too many real examples of this for me to get pleasure out of watching it.
As a kid I grew up watching and loving the old Universal monster movies instead of Disney and such. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is still one of my favorite movies of all time.

I did not like Hostel for the same reason. Some I can tolerate as I'm a sucker for revenge flicks. I did not hate, nor particularly love The Last House on the Left with it's somewhat realistic violence.

Not horror, but I once walked out of a Chuck Norris movie due to an all too realistic looking robbery scene with a brutal action that made me cringe so bad I decided not to watch the rest. With Schindler's List, I watched the whole thing, but was very uncomfortable and will never watch it again. Same with Saving Private Ryan, which gave me a headache due to it's intensity. I like my horror, but not when it gets too realistic on the screen. What I see has to be something that only happens in imagination, or if it is realistic I'd rather have it implied, but off the screen.

I'd guess that I'm in the minority but I've never been a fan of horror movies. My wife likes them, Just another thing
that we are opposites on.

mulegolf I don't care for most horror movies either. I prefer comedy. Life is crappy enough, I don't need to be paranoid about serial killers around every corner.
