Just got back from my PXG woods fitting. Took in my existing stock....
Gen5 X driver 9* with Xcaliber Avalon 5 stiff shaft. Also had the Cypher 40 R shaft that came with the head.
0211 3w and 3h with Tensei Blue R.
Also took my Atomics in to compare. The Atomics 3w is one of the greatest clubs ever. The 5w never shined like the 3w, but it filled the gap to my 4i - although the gap was a bit odd.
I bought the 0211 3w and 3h hoping that it could be adjusted to fit the gap better - and I like chipping with a hybrid better than a 5w.
We started off with the 3 hybrid versus the Atomics 5w. Got the standard high fade, but the hybrid was much higher flying than my 18* 5w. Carry distance was comparable. Fitter messed with weights, and either the stock 10 or a lighter 5 worked best - we stayed with 10. Then he adjusted the hosel to the small + and that dropped the ball flight down a bit but more importantly turned it into a dead straight flight. Picked up 5 yards carry as well. Shockingly that was done by increasing the loft (which closed the face) and resulted in a squarer contact.
The 0211 3w went through a similar fit, and the result was the same carry distance as my Atomics 3w. However, spin was 1000 lower, so that should work well.
The driver fit was interesting. Tested my gamer step with the Avalon, and he said I was getting 220 carry but low spin (2000). Increasing loft helped a bit to 225 carry. I was expecting 230-235 carry. He then pulled out the Cypher, and said "this is probably too light and soft for you, but we can try it". After adjusting, I was getting a straight flight, 235-240 carry and 2900 spin. In the end it was about 15 yards longer. I'll wait to see if that holds true on the course - not so sure on that Cypher and I love the Avalon.
As a high fader, I never would have tried the + settings. I guess that is why we do fittings.
Fitter was really nice and helpful. May have to go back for an iron fitting next.
