I was out for a walk yesterday and found a I-phone laying in the snow. Recent warm weather has melted a lot of the snow, so I guess it was under the snow . Its a Apple but don't know which one. ( I can;t keep up with all the new models) It turns on, but locked out without password. Sooo, how do I find the owner? I know these things ain't cheep.

Tough one. I guess maybe if Siri doesn't know who the owner is, who would you even turn that phone into?

If you put out an ad in the classified, I guess you could require the passcode as proof that it's the owners? Explaining that you'll return the phone in lieu of cash-payment for the ad investment in the morning paper?

Check the call log. Call someone and tell them the owner has lost his phone. Then let them know how to collect it.

If they refuse, wipe it and do what you want....

He said it's locked out and requiring the passcode. That means he can't check the call log. And I'm not sure Apple can do anything about working around the passcode, because they've spent the past three days arguing with the Federal Government about why that's against their company's ethics and can't help them get potential data from the the terrorists' locked phones from the California shooting.

It might be one of these deals where there basically is no solution.

If someone has the locating program on there they can pinpoint where their phone is. I would just hold onto it and keep it on as much as you can in the hopes someone sees that you have it. The only bad thing is you have to hope they don't think you stole it.

Yes, take it to Apple. The terrorist phone deal doesn't apply here. The government knows whose phone it is, they want the contents. They can use the serial number to see which wireless retailer has an active account on it.

The serial number/IMEI # should be on the back plate of the phone at the bottom. You can run that through the Apple ID checker to see the model of the phone and if it's still in warranty, etc.

Thanks for all the replies, Siri won't talk to me, the phone says it has not been updated for more than 2 weeks. so I am guessing the owner already has a new phone, I will probably just take it to the apple store.

Taking it to Apple is smart. The tell tale sign is nobody has called it yet, solution would be easy then.
