bigshank fortunately, I don't pay a lot for the fuel I burn. That gets passed off to those who have me driving for them. Fortunately for me, when it's just the truck, I get pretty decent mileage. The way I do fuel for when hauling horses, is I use the lowest mileage I've ever gotten on the overhead display with a trailer. That was 10 mpg. I use that to figure out how much fuel I will need to make a trip somewhere with a trailer. If I haul the trailer one way, and I've quoted/ got fuel for both ways, I have 'spare' fuel. I also get better mileage than 10 mpg with the trailer. I make sure that I have enough to get to where I need to even with any detours.
