ode yeah I'm not opposed to old school fixed hosels, but maybe go square to slightly open FA for all but 12? I sometimes wonder about the QC on loft, lie and FA for drivers. I had a Callaway that was 3 open in the closed position 😡

Isn't the higher tolerance/ cheaper manufacture cost the reason most of us leaned towards components in the first place?
I know it was one of the reasons for me.

And before I get the hate, I still look at OEM stuff in the store whenever I go in there.
I also still think, why TF would I buy this for most of it?

I do this, esp. with drivers. It really is a joke when checking the settings to make sure they are the same, then seeing a variety of face angles at address. Cobra & TM used to be notorious for this, and now I see Callaway is also getting very lax.

For me mostly yes. With components (at least Wishon) I liked that I could pay extra and get a head hand selected. I always went for a square to slightly open 11* driver. That was perfect for me. Their tolerances really didn't matter to me since I could get what I wanted.

I've had many component market driver heads that I've liked, but never had one I loved. All of my Holy Grails of distance, accuracy, sound and feel have been OEM. Most recently, Honma. Callaway, PING, XXIO, Cobra all seem to deliver that extra shizzle.

or, it's the shafts of today, which are obviously better made for the most part, especially in OEM heads.

KCee 9.5 says square. Don't know how they would accomplish that though, if made in same foundry.

The guy that owns our only golf shop here, told me he had a customer bring back his new Callaway irons for a lie/loft check. The customer ordered standard spec. He says they were "all over the place". One club was 3 degrees flat.

When I dropped off my Maltby's for adjustment, I gave him the actual loft and lie numbers I wanted. I didn't say to make them "2 degrees upright". I have no idea what the heads were from the factory.

Ive mostly played OEM all my life. I've tried lots of component heads but as I said above.....

2002? Probably PING, Cobra or Callaway. I hit them as far as I could.

Funny though, when I think back 20 years. Up until just a couple years ago, the only OEM clubs I'd played had been a couple drivers. Cobra SS 380, and Titleist E(something). And a 975D.

No! I love component irons, hybrids, even some putters. It's just component drivers that seem to be short of the mark. It's probably in my head.

I've experienced that, but only on perfect strikes(as you say). Additionally, I've never spent the $ to put a high-end shaft in a component driver head. I've had plenty of component built drivers that performed just fine and scored well with them. It's just that the decent components now are $100+. I bought a new Honma for $164. Used(like new) for $150. Callaway Max $165. It's a no brainer on value.
