He finished 3rd, beaten twice. He made a mistake? I see no bogies on his scorecard, or Smith's. Did Smith make any mistakes?
Then there is Cameron Young, who had 2 huge mistakes that stand out on the scorecard....bogies. What if he had no mistakes?

Rory still finishes 3rd. Beaten twice. Outplayed by 2 players. Elementary.

As it relates to his own strategy, it absolutely is. He did not accomplish what he said he was going to do, take care of business on the par 5,s. He parred the last one. Others suggest it was the putter....I don't agree and above was my counter point to that!

If putting within 2" from the cup would count for only 1/2 point Rory would have won. Some days they just don't drop, that's golf. And Camerons birdie putts were no gimmies either, but they dropped. That made the difference.

Rory's never seem to drop. Putting is as much part of the game as anything else ( obviously). These guys are pros, there misses are minimalized. They're not going to putt and not graze the hole like we do. A miss is a miss. If Rory ever becomes a good putter under pressure, watch out.

or missed the hole entirely, on makeable putts, that most of the field were making.
Those lip outs were hit too hard btw, so saying lip outs is flattering.
There's highlite reels I saw on TV showing his ineptitude on the greens.
It is absolutely the reason the Claret Jug went on a commercial flight to Aussie or FLA instead of a private jet to USA or NI.

Spuzz True, many of the putts weren't "bad", but just not quite good enough. He either needs to putt better or hit the ball closer. For a player that drives it like Rory he really should be tapping in for birdie on at least some par 5's. I didn't watch, but it looked like he had long-ish putts for the par 5's so maybe putting was not the root cause of the lack of scoring. You could make the argument that one needs a bit of luck to win and maybe he just hasn't had that either in the majors recently.

Have someone help with green reading is the answer.
Same deal with our Brooke Henderson.
However, neither will happen, due to ego or family/friendship considerations, so maybe time to lower the bar of expectation.

Cam Smith going into the Open was statistically the best putter. So said Brandel Chamblee. Lol He was making everything early on and then had an off day, but the putter was hot again at the end.

His putting will be scrutinized for the rest of the year, we'll see how it hold up.
