I am the lucky beneficiary of Shokosugi's move to the Wishon EQs -- I got his old Sterlings heads and a set of taper tip Aldila shafts. I'm really looking forward to assembling and playing these!
I have a question, but before I ask it, I have to say that I don't really believe that what I'm discussing (shaft kick point and shaft flex) will make even one bit of difference, particularly since I'm going to be playing the clubs at about a 8 to 9-iron shaft length. We mortals will hardly flex these..
I have never worked with taper tipped shafts before. I ASSUME (I'll make a few assumptions, so just understand beginning here that I don't really know what I'm talking about) that taper tip shafts are not tip trimmed, but instead have 3-iron shaft, 4-iron shaft, 5-iron shaft, etc., and they are just butt trimmed to length.
If that is actually the case, as you butt trim the shaft, isn't the kick point moving "higher" (i.e., toward the hands), which promotes a lower ball flight? That may not be a big deal when you're doing a small butt trim for a variable length set, but considering that I'm playing SL to a 8/9-iron length, doesn't that move the kickpoint a long way in the long irons?
In that case, the less severely trimmed shafts, which were originally the 8, 9, PW shafts, would actually have a lower kick point and be higher launching. If that's true, then I would put my short iron shafts in my longer irons.
Now, what about weight? 🙂
Again, I don't think this makes any difference for us mere mortals. I'm just curious
