I waffle back and forth between 44 and 45 inches. I can't say there is much distance difference. The thing I see at both lengths is that I don't feel I get my best drives often enough. All of my other clubs, I can hit pretty close to the center. Let's say my 5 wood, or 4 hybrid, I feel like the majority of my shots with them are strikes that I'd call very good or excellent. I have resolved to make that a priority for my driver this year. It might be how I tee it, ball position, upward angle of attack, those sorts of things. Or it might be clubfitting. Or all of the above. But that is my mission for this year. I play an open course, so I've been able to get away with missing fairways. But that's no excuse for missing the center of the face. I'm pretty confident my center hits with a shorter driver will make me happy.
I have a Ping Rapture first version 3 wood. It's titanium, and it's big. Mine is reshafted, and is 43.25". Useless off the turf but great off the tee. It hits close enough to my driver that I know there is little point in me going less than 44" on the driver. If I'm going shorter than 44, I might as well just use that 3 wood. OTOH it makes me realize the value of a center strike.
