Nippon Modus 105

Steel iron shafts. Anyone have experience with these? Should I expect true to flex in stiff?

TheBlade 3 or so years ago I did the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer test gizmo. It recommended Modus 105 R flex. I was able to demo a set of Mizunos. The shaft had a strong ballflight. I liked the mid irons but found the short irons to feel heavy and stiff. I think I'm more used to unitized shafts, meaning the ones that come as all 41 inches, and then you tip each iron differently. That makes the short shafts actually lighter than the longer iron shafts. And the flex curve is usually softer. So what I'm saying is take my review with a grain of salt.

I think the 105 is sort of a light Dynamic Gold kind of shaft.

Tried the shaft a couple of times during fittings and also built myself a test club with it. Seemed "true to flex", but honestly unless shafts have a hugely different feel I sometimes struggle to discern a difference. I demoed DG105 R300 and S300 for my TM irons and honestly I could not tell without looking at the label. I tried KBS and Nippon that day as well and after awhile everything felt very similar.

This is true for the majority of golfers. It's more the shaft weight and if shaft profiles are very very different.

I’ve had them for years in my Ping ie-1 irons. I wouldn’t say they play soft to flex. They are smooth and without any harsh feeling. The big problem I had, and a couple of my friends had the same problem was hitting them high and right. I ended up shelving them for a while and used my Nike Vapor pro combos that had a heavier DGPro s300 shaft in it. Helped me keep the swing on plane and my timing.

A few years later I took them back out to see if I could dial them in and I was able to.

scotts33 Yup, half club or so shorter but more accurate with the Nikes. With practice I got the Pings going, but it took a while. Over the winter I have been hitting my bosses Titleist T-mb irons with the ascending weight Nippon 980 and they are light as well but I’m pretty much good with the lighter weight now. There are just gonna be surprises though when you change weight as you know.
