Some random thoughts. What other independent contractors have essentially a chance of winning the lottery by playing golf for extremely large purses every week?
Make the cut in a tournament and you most likely receive a 5 figure payout. Of course you’re not truly an independent contractor. You’re a member of a very exclusive club with lots of benefits and perks. Including a pension plan etc., if you can make it.
I knew several independent contractors when I worked for AT&T. They didn’t have a pension plan.
The PGA Tour is a philanthropic organization.
They’re non profit and don’t give out large contracts like other pro sports. So yes a PGA Tour member has autonomy over his career if he can make it to the PGA Tour.
Plenty of so called journeymen that have never won on the PGA Tour and made a nice living playing golf.
The Champions Tour has no cut and the last place player gets a paycheck. Maybe that’s in the PGA’s future. Who knows? I think we’ll see more changes coming.
That’s usually what happens when a disruption happens in any business. But anyone who thinks the Saudi’s sports washing is a good thing for professional golf is mistaken imo.
Saw several prominent players flush their reputations down the toilet yesterday.
