3's require some luck ... for sure.
For me it would start with needing at least to 2 letters from the first word, else I would go with my standard second word. Even if I have three letters after the second guess - it's probably no better than a 50-50 on the next guess. Which is probably why my average is 4 (with one more 3 than 5, the same number of 2's and 6's, one 1, and zero losses). I don't see how anyone could average 3's.
