Alex Trebek's recent passing brought about this question: Which celebrity/famous persons' deaths intrigued you the most and why?

Could be sports, or entertainers (actors, actresses, musicians), cultural icons from other aspects of life, etc. Given that some of us are younger than others, it might be interesting to hear some of the responses.

Just a personal sampling of mine, off the top of my head...

Music - John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, Prince
TV hosts - Alex Trebek

Sports - Len Bias, Thurman Munson, Hank Gathers, Pat Tillman, Reggie White, Dale Earnhardt, Muhammad Ali, Kobe Bryant, Arthur Ashe, Arnold Palmer

Actors/Actresses - John Belushi, Chris Farley, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, James Gandolfini, Robin Williams

Music - Elvis, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Tom Petty, David Bowie,

Cultural Icons - Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy Jr, Dick Clark, Hugh Hefner

If I had to pick only three:

Elvis - he was a heartthrob to my mother, and I still remember her crying much of that day and watching the news. I was only 8 yrs old, but still occasionally look at some of the newspapers she saved from the day after he died when I go home to visit.

John Lennon - I was somewhat interested in the Beatles and there was unconfirmed reports that the band was getting back together around the time of his death. And besides - who in their right mind would want to kill John Lennon!

Princess Diana - I was never really into British Royalty, but with some of the documentaries that I've watched in the years since (including the Netflix series, "The Crown") I've found her life very interesting. Never been much of a conspiracy theorist, but I also wonder if there's some validity in some of the speculation surrounding her death involving the Royal family.

Honorable mentions:

Hank Gathers - I had just changed the channel, as I was channel surfing while watching the game he was playing in when he collapsed. Incredible.

Len Bias - he was my favorite college hoops player and I can still remember the day he passed away like it was yesterday.

Dale Earnhardt - was never into Nascar racing that much, but when I saw the footage of his tragic car crash (and not understanding the physics/dynamics behind the head trauma that he incurred) I was shocked that he died in that crash that day. I mean, when I think back on the number of times Evel Knievel cheated death in spectacular fashion, only to see Earnhardt dying in a non spectacular way that he did...

Ali - granted, he lived a lot longer than I thought he would given the declining state of his health, but the greatest fighter of my lifetime, without doubt.

Kobe - unbelievable that his fate and that of his daughter would come in a helicopter crash, and at such a young age.

Michael Jackson - shocking that his life deteriorated the way it did. Same could likewise be said of Whitney, although she wasn't quite as world famous as Michael.
