Ferrule madness

When I first built clubs, I slid the ferrules on over a little epoxy. Then when I started reshafting and re-using shafts, I switched to dry installs. They are so tight that they don’t move. But that method carries its own frustrations sometimes on the ones that are almost impossible to get into place. I’m almost exclusively using GW ferrules, and they are tight.

I’m gonna try the wet method again. Will it really help with these tight ferrules, or will they still stick and then I’ll have a lot more mess to recover from? Seems like if they are being installed over epoxy, I should try to find ones that aren’t so damn tight.

Thoughts? Brands?

Heat em up for 30 seconds or so using a cup of hot water. Be sure to use nice even pressure pushing them on. I use whatever head they’re going in.

Jeff's method is what I used most of the time. I have had times where I had to slightly increase the inside diameter of the ferrule with rolled sandpaper. I install everything "wet".

I blow my heat gun (low setting) on them for a 10 seconds or so and they slide on easy. I like a little epoxy under the ferrule.

I used to use the hot water method. Since then I’ve used the heat gun when needed. They’re so tight that they deform on the bottom edge from the force that it takes. If they are heated, they deform more.

Is this super tight fit a brand problem with GW ferrules?

Agreed possibility exists of deformation.

I have always used the wet method of slight epoxy layer between hosel and shaft and slide them on using a block. Coat inner hosel and shaft then final seating using head. No issues with ferrule creep or flying heads.

I use some GW but mostly Wishon and Grail never an issue with fit and try and use close outer O.D. of ferrule to outer O.D. of hosel so less ferrule turning on blue belt 42" machine.

I soak ferrules in isopropyl alcohol for 30 seconds with no installation problems.

I am having the opposite problem with the last batch of ferrules I got off of Ebay. They are too loose for my liking. They slide on too easy. I never used the wet method until I got these ferrules and I hate them.
