I was picking up baskets at the range and one of our members was there and he has a set a few years old. I grabbed the 7 iron. I’ve never hit these outside before.

Holy Crap!!! I would love to know how far it went. Height was perfect, better than my Pings which are too high. Feel was fine, like my Ping ie1 irons but the ball just jumped off the face. I could see how much faster it was.

I’ve thought my next iron set would be the 790 or 770, just wanted to actually hit one. Wow!

I like the way they sound when struck with real club speed. I play with 2 guys in Florida that can make those beauties work.

sdandrea1 Oh you are so right, I was expecting some clickiness but they sound solid!

meagain What are you waiting for?

      Hitting the lottery
      Huge inheritance
Not having to pay for a kitchen remodel and a wedding

It’s never the Year of John

I just dream about getting new stuff. All my shit is old

        Par4QC Didn't know you had a daughter??!!

Jesse just came back from Japan with his wife. They got married at a town hall over there and he wants to have a fake ceremony here next April on their one year anniversary. They had a little party with her relatives and friends over there. Her side probably won’t come so we’re just planning it .

Had them. Wanted to love them but I was not overly impressed. They had modus 105 installed. Yes, they go long but I had trouble holding greens. Turned them into G410. G410 far better for me.

You can definitely pick up a 2019 P790's for a fraction of retail, especially since the 2021 model has been recently released.
I have the 4 and 5 iron mixed with P770 for the 6 thru AW.
P790 is built for distance and theoretically add height to hold greens but I found the P770's deliver much better green holding capability.

The 770’s spin a little more so that’ll help you. I’ll see, ideally I’d get fit by the guy that fit me for my driver but then I’m getting into serious $$. The 2019 would be fine too !

            Typhoon

I just finished an iron fitting this afternoon and the finalists were...... the Cally DCB, new P790 and Titleist T200.

It was close but the order I hit best were P790 - DCB - T200
I was surprised as my prelim showed the DCB hard to beat. Typhoon is right. The P770 was close and
would most likely be the choice for the 'strong' player. The P790 checked all the boxes.

This was coming from Cally CF16's.

Eguller Never had a fitting, not sure I ever will--not playing enough. Do they try last year's clubs or just the top-of-the-line expensive ones?

Eguller The 770's look great in the bag...but so do the 2021 790's. Even though I'm a "plus" handicap, I'm all for forgiveness so Id have no problem beating someone's ass with the 790. I go by hit the most forgiving club you can stand looking at.

                  Typhoon

Right. I tried the Epic Forged and knocked the crap out of it, but it did not 'fit my eye'....lol.
I was again surprised at how nice the P790's looked.

Bravopilot Do they try last year's clubs or just the top-of-the-line expensive ones?

My club has most of the newer models to fit. If the club is still available, they will fit for it.
It does narrow down quickly as to what fits your skill level and what you hit best.

Eguller I was again surprised at how nice to P790's looked.

You always think they are going to look chunky right?? thick topline etc... I think its because you hear sooo much about the 770, MC etc... and all they do is compare it to the 790. " The top line is thinner than the 790", the Blade length is shorter than the 790". So naturally, you listen to that and think to yourself, " shit, the 790 must look like a friggin hockey stick."

Then you look at it and its probably smaller and better looking than what you have now!

Maugust789 P790 is built for distance and theoretically add height to hold greens but I found the P770's deliver much better green holding capability.

From what I've seen, some players have problems with distance control and not being able to hold greens with P790s and other 'player's distance' irons because they can't get enough spin on the ball - for others, that lower spin makes them an ideal fit (which suggests that going out and trying the different types of club available is a very good idea, or at least a way of avoiding a rather expensive mistake!)

(I haven't hit any of TaylorMade's recent irons, so not posting from personal experience. For what it's worth, I did try a few of Ping's range when I was fitted for my current i210s - hit a few with their player's distance model (the i500), and didn't really see any difference in performance compared to the i210.)

Beware of hot spots. I’m not sure about the current offering but those originals definitely had them.

Also, for me, there was a large distance gap between the 7 and 8 iron. Again, this was with the original offering.

The first generation 790 had the hot spot issue. The Ping i500 I just really wanted to like but the only time I hit it was indoors and it sounded horrible. That sound translated into me just putting a bad swing on them. The i210 are a great iron, I have the ie-1 and they feel great. They go a little too high with the modus 105s and I’m not a big fan of the head shape out on the toe. Ping tends to not have a rounded toe and for that reason I’m looking at the 790 and maybe the 770. I also like having some offset which you get with the 790.
