SVonhof Haha, as a lifer in the gas station business, I remember when we had to scramble to add 1's to the manual signs we used. Then we had the lexan ones that you used the suction cup on a pole to slide the numbers in and out, and for the dollar numeral with a decimal point I remember when they had to send us out the 2. number. And the 3.
I also remember a workaround we had to do to price by the half gallon because the manual "computers", those things with the number wheels that spun as you pumped, only went to 99.9. So the fix was to multiply the sale amount by 2. Then we bought computers that had an additional digit, but it only went to 0 or 1. I think by the time we got to the 2's, we were probably using electronics.
I also remember when cigarettes went to a dollar. All the smokers were saying, when they get to a buck, I'm quitting!
I doubt we will see ten dollar gas. Not even in CA. If so, they will probably start selling by liters instead of gallons.
When this kind of thing happens, everyone convinces themselves that the price is going to keep going up. I think a year from now the price will be closer to $3 than $6.
