The difference is that Fran Tarkenton mostly scrambled until a receiver got open. He rarely advanced the ball past the line of scrimmage like they do now. He'd have gotten killed if he ran the ball like some of the QB's now. He wasn't terribly big.

I never watched the Bears. for the obvious historical reasons. Then, in '83 this woman I met was crazy about them and I figured if she liked them, she would love me!! So, shit happened in '85....a wedding, and the Bears had a helluva a season, putting it mildly. I may have suffered some through the years, but now I don't have to any longer.
Yet for some reason, I'm still watching those dumb bastages.

And make no mistake about it, I did rile her a might on Sundays in the winter, pointing out a 'few' flaws in that team. 😁

I actually grew up as a Bears fan. While I was growing up the Bears were our assigned game in
our area of Minnesota. Our TV stations were in Sioux Falls, SD and they were assigned the Bears
games each week. I fondly remember watching Gayle Sayers and Dick Bukus play. Then, in 1961
the Vikings came into existence and I became a Vikings and Bears fan. I slowly drifted away from the Bears, except when they play the Packers. Then I'm firmly a Bears fan again.

DonM I'm just an NFL fan, but not fanatical about any given team. I don't die if I can't watch, and most Sundays early in the season, I go play golf. The Bears are kind of the regional game here, as you know, so I do watch if I've nothing else to do. And if KC is playing at the same time, I'm flipping channels.
Why not watch The Bears....I mean, migawd, they may actually win. 😄
And there are 3-4 games they should have, that they did not. So, their record could be much better than it is, and they actually are a better team than records indicate. But, that is general history of that franchise also. So....they are The Bears. The Rodney Dangerfields of the NFL.

You right on that. A buddy of mine is a NY Giants fan. He's never been to NY. He was a little kid when he chose them, because he thought they were actual giants. He's stuck with them since.

Same here, but I do get a bit pissed when the BUCS, Commanders and Broncos lose. Not fanatically pissed, just a little pissed.

While being a life long bear fan, I'm also a realist. IOW, I usually expect them to lose given their roster over the last 4 yrs has lacked the talent to win consistently. Throw in some dysfunctional ownership, management and coaching, how can one expect a different result ?

propman I think this GM is shaping up to be their best since Vanisi. Which means 40 years or so. He’s the top of the football food chain there so if he’s good, then good things should follow. The prior two were so bad that he can’t help but be an improvement at least.

mulegolf I watched any game on our 2 channel TV back then. And they were always regional games that sometimes really sucked. I was a fan of the Purple People Eaters, just because I liked defense best, basically still the only reason to watch Bears games. Late games would be Rams, Fearsome Foursome, or the Raiders.....migawd those guys were huge and brutal, esp. Matuszak when he got there😄. And won tons. Like everything in the world, NFL was a lot different.
Except the Bears, of course. 🤣

Par4QC back in the 70s, I really enjoyed watching the raiders and afc games in general. The offenses were so wide open.
Took great pleasure watching the Snake/Biletnikoff beating the Vikes in the SB.

Same old story with the Vikings, get to a big game and forget how to play. Sometimes I wonder why I'm still a fan of the Vikings. They've broken my heart so many times. I'm kind of expecting it again today.
