In light of Devante Adams catch / stripped of the ball / no interception call last night. We have to revisit the Brandon Cooks catch / interception.
If you didn’t see it. Adams makes the catch, but on replay his knee is down and then the ball is taken away. Ruled catch by Adams / down by contact. By replay. No football move.
With the Cooks interception. Cooks makes the catch and hits the ground. Then as they roll on the ground McMillian takes the ball from him and it’s ruled an interception. No replay. If you apply the Adams down by contact ruling then Cooks is down by contact as well.
One (Cooks) is ruled an interception when he has the ball for a split second on the ground before the ball is taken away. And one (Adams )is ruled a catch / down by contact when his knee hits the ground for a split second before the ball is taken away.
They were talking about this (this morning). There’s no continuity. In both cases no football move is made.
If in both cases the balls were stripped by the defenders and hit the ground (no interception) they’d both be ruled incomplete because no ‘football move’ was made.
Rex Ryan was adamant that the Cooks catch should’ve been ruled a catch. He blames Cooks for not jumping up and complaining to the Ref for the call instead of playing dead and laying on the ground. And again no replay in this case.
Saw Greg Olson this morning and he said this all goes back to the Calvin Johnson touchdown catch where he caught the ball and then set it down on the ground. Which was then ruled not a touchdown.
What is a catch has been a mess since. Anyway again, I was rooting for the Bills so the Patriots had home field for the AFC championship game.
Then when Bo Nix broke his ankle I was fine with the call. lol
