Typhoon Local sports radio is lambasting the Patriots over the QB Joe Milton trade. Awful move…. Very confusing AND the report that it wasn’t the best deal they could have got.
These things happen when a team gets a new coaching staff - if a player doesn't fit what the new regime is looking for, they tend not to stay on the roster very long...
I was a bit surprised to see that the Patriots only got a 5th-round pick (with a 7th going back to the Cowboys) for a QB taken in the 6th round of last year's draft. Yes, there were reasons that Milton was a sixth-rounder (johnnydoom described these well), but the one game that he played last season showed some promise (with the caveat that it was a relatively meaningless week 18 game).
The timing was also a bit of a surprise - it wouldn't be difficult for the Patriots to have kept Milton on their roster until training camp and preseason, and it's likely that there would be at least one team desperate for any sort of viable QB by the start of September (particularly with what appears to be a relatively weak draft pool of quarterbacks).
