That's BS and totally situational. To suggest that Brady made some sort of benevolent sacrifice is duplicitous. He didn't pass up a higher salary for his team. He did it for his own benefit; to surround himself with better players, much as MartinD addressed in his post about context.

professor One could fairly reasonably argue that everybody always does the thing that benefits them most. In there case of a person who dedicated themselves to helping others, the argument would be that doing so made said person feel good about themselves; therefore, the choice still benefitted them.

It sounds really cynical now that I have put it down in writing, but I do think the philosophical argument could be made.

Disagree with it being bullshit. Not just my opinion. Heard it discussed on FS1 (The Facility) and no mention of Brady. Just know if you get the max as QB then you'll see talented players leave. Don't complain. It's just math and the salary cap.

I fully expected the Chiefs to experience this when Mahomes got what he got. So far they've overcome it. We'll see how long that lasts. The 49'ers may have lost their opportunity with Purdy.

Anytime you can get a QB like him on his rookie contract you can stock up on talent around him. That window is probably closing now.

Ha!!! 11 Championships to 2. Bird was great no question. It's all subjective with no definitive way to measure.

Even if a QB did agree to a smaller contract in order to help the team out, how much difference is that likely to make? For example, if Dak Prescott had signed a contract in line with the Hurts/Tagovailoa contracts (i.e. $53m per year instead of $60m), what does that extra few million dollars get you? One mid-level starter in free agency? (OK, that's probably a significant upgrade for this year's Cowboys if it was used at RB, a better second receiver, on the offensive line, or to add a big run-stuffing DT, but probably only one of these if you want players at a level that will actually make a difference - given that I was able to list off four areas of need without having to think too hard about it (admittedly with the benefit of hindsight), that's not going to turn the 2024 Cowboys into a playoff team.)

I think Burrows was talking about Mixon. Their running game sucks this year. Interior O line sucks as well. Again, it's just math and the salary cap.

There’s an existential philosophy that suggests just what you stated. But two things can be correct at the same time; that I pursued altruism as both a career and my charitable contribution. Can’t speak for you.
It might seem unusual to try and perceive me in that manner. But PA-PLAYA could vouch that my real persona is a far cry from my birthed into FGI persona. I come here for fun and also proof that two things can be wrong simultaneously.

The NFL is a business. Good businesses make good decisions. When you look at Dallas and the Giants, you have one HUGE thing in common - owners who are ultimately really shitty managers. They don't know what they're doing with personnel. They're playing checkers while the good businesses they're primarily competing against are playing chess.

I thought letting go of Zach Ertz a few years back was a horrible decision. Turns out I would be a shitty business manager, because it was precisely the right move. Knowing when to move on, knowing who to pick up in free agency, is such an understated aspect of success in the NFL.

Simply put, some teams get lucky. The rest just understand the business part of the NFL better than others.

No question it's all about ownership. Ownership is responsible for putting in good management.

The Jets are a great example. Owner Woody Johnson nixed a trade because his son said the player rated too low in the Madden NFL Video Game. 😏

Par4QC If O lines were better, and all around the league they are very poor, QBs would not be 'running QBs'.

I think what's happened is D-lines and defensive schemes have improved over the last couple decades more than O-lines. O linemen aren't necessarily worse than they used to be, but they aren't as effective vs. today's better defensive fronts. Quarterbacks have less time to throw, especially on obvious passing downs. Also, it's not merely "running" that makes these QBs valuable. Avoiding sacks and buying time to make pass plays is huge.

The most accurate of your observations. Yes, one doesn't need to scramble per se but minimally, navigate the "pocket" having that uncanny ability to nimbly sense the pressure, side-step it, step up in the collapsing pocket, what have you.
Otherwise, I think I shared my opinion that the downsized speed of defenses, especially edge-rushers, has created opportunity to get back to some semblance of a running game. Hence, the increase in some excellent running backs and successful run games.
Time will soon tell - in a few days for some teams and about a week and a half for others.

You just described three Hall of Famers. Marino, P. Manning and Brady were slower than molasses. But all three could maneuver and side step in the pocket as good as anyone.

Correct! As a Pitt grad and being there at the same time as Marino. That was a treat other than knowing too much about his off-field behavior. Talk about quick release! The story goes that his father, his coach in little league football taught him to throw and forbade him from pulling the ball behind his shoulder. He was taught/forced to throw with the ball in front of his shoulder and throw with his hip turn. Sounds a bit like golf.

Well, I'm a happy camper Eagle fan. They made the smart decision and not the emotional one. Starters rest on Sunday. Great decision. But tough on those fans who ponied-up a lot of money for tickets to watch an exhibition game. Yes!!! They should exchange every single ticket for a free swap to the first home playoff game!

A bit surprising they are not letting Barkley play. I would have asked him, not told him he wasn't. Makes a diff in thoughts.

They pulled him from the Rams game when he was a few yards from the all time single game record. But, he told them 'play the kids', let them run, when asked if he wanted to go back in. Did not care about that record.

He also now does not care about the 40 yr. old record. He does....but wants more long term in the playoffs. Let's say he's 'OK' with it😉.
But, there is still a few days to go, of thinking on it. Won't be a surprise to see him suited up.

Hell, I'd want it. May never have that chance over a full season again. Long standing record....big reason it is such.
