Just got this history of MacGregor Golf in my mailbox from "My Golf Spy." A good read for anyone who
remembers this old company that was one of the leaders of the golf industry at one time. I remember
in the 70's and early 80's MacGregor had Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, and Johnny Miller all playing
their equipment on tour. In fact, in 1975, the three of them all went down to the wire on Sunday at the
Masters (not bad advertising for the company!!). Enjoy....

fatshot interesting. My first full set in 1983 was macgregor tourneys handed down by my dad. From there it was Wilson staff fg17 tour blades until they got stolen. After that it was ram Tom Watson blades which took me into the world of too many iron sets to remember. I remember ping eye2 looking huge ugly and unplayable.

bigshank I played the Wilson Staff Tour Blades for a long time. I don't think I ever had any MacGregor clubs back in the day.

Reading your story reminded me of a friend of mine who is one of my regular golf partners. He grew up caddying at one of the private clubs on the other side of town called Highland Meadows, where the LPGA has held a yearly tour event for 30+ years. One of his fellow-caddies became a good college player and eventually tried the tour (unsuccessfully) for a year or two. Fast forward a few years and my buddy ran into that friend of his, and asked him
"Whatever happened to that old MacGregor Tourney driver I traded you a few years ago?" His friend laughed and
said, "I gave it to Jerry Pate, and he won the (1976) U.S. Open with it....!!!!"

Just a week or so ago my friend showed me this cover of Golf Digest he has from that US Open with his old
MacGregor driver in Jerry Pate's hands....

I think I still have an MT persimmon 3 wood one of the kids on my HS golf team gave me. I ought to take it to the
range some time and see how much better metal woods/graphite shafts are than persimmon/steel.....

candukid I couldn't find anything new from Mactec except individual clubs on Amazon. Neither Golf Galaxy nor Dick's Sporting goods carries them. I gather from the article that the MacGregor name has been bought and sold several times, so it's hard telling who owns it now and what they're producing under that name. Maybe some other members here know more about it....

I've got a set of MacGregor MT irons, 2-10, and an excellent condition bag they are in. iirc, I did play them once about 20 yrs. ago.
Then used the 2i for carving the bird that Thanksgiving. 😄

As some of you guys know I’m a Macgregor nut. There’s an outfit in UK selling Macgregor and an E outfit in Us called golf outlet America selling their stuff. I got a Macgregor cat bag that is the nicest bag I have owned. 14 dividers with big putter well that’s out of the way, front pouch lifts up for cart strap to go under and hold bag tight, club spaces lined up in 4 rows makes grabbing right club fast. Bought the adjustable Mac Tec hybrid, my only adjustable club. I still don’t see adjustable changing loft but it gives me a hybrid with an open looking face. Bought the Macgregor grips. A bit heavy at 60 grams but feel great and big enough without build up. All the stuff nowadays is from China anyhow.

My favorite MacGregor branded club when Bobby Grace lent his name to MacGregor. I played with it this morning 11 putts for 9. When it came out in 2004 the highest MoI off center face balanced putter that I can remember. Copper insert is money and face milled and best alignment if you like lines. Still one of the best after all these years.

I am still gaming another putter that Grace designed is branded MacGregor. Haven't found anything that can oust it yet.
