I’m thinking of getting one for the house. If any of you have them what do you have, cost, maintenance... are you happy with it etc...

I’m not looking to spend a ton but after seeing what the water did to my shut offs and the plumber saying how the hot water in our town is brutal I’d rather be proactive on saving my new heating system and what’s left of my water pipes!

Sounds like you need a softener instead. Bought mine online installed it myself.

Our town water is crap. My plumbing company is from our town so I figure I’ll contact them anyway, they know the water issues in town.

Doesn’t the hot water come out of your hot water heater? Maybe it’s shot.

Funny too was the plumber said he filled his pool and the water tested perfect.... just needed calcium hardness. I said,” good to swim in but not a selling point in drinking water.”

It's pretty hard water where we're at and I bought a Kinetico water softner years ago.
They're a little pricy but well worth it. IMO
Uses very little salt, no electricity, faucet's, shower heads etc. show no signs of calcium deposits.
We also have a reverse osmosis system for drinking water that makes the water taste and test
as good as bottled water.

We have a softener not being used. All home owners in our culdesac said they quit using them after Mason went to Cincinnati water. Our water is shit. I've had them come out and test it twice and it falls under the limits. The rust and build up left behind, not to mention the corrosion says different. They say we're the last in line (not Dio). I should probably get somebody out here that knows how to hook this softener back up.

My water goes through a big blue 1 micron filter into a reverse osmosis system. After about 13 years I noticed the hot water flow slowing down....calcium/sediment was clogging the domestic coil in the furnace. After weighing few options I decided to try cleaning out the coil with a 50/50 mix of CLR and hot water. I used a pond pump with a short length of hose to feed the mix to the coil. After a few flushes things were back to normal. After dealing with this issue I installed a small softener set up (3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS and Replacement Cartridge AP431) to help keep it clean. I change the big blue filter and the scale reducer cartridge every 3 to 4 months. I'm not sure if any of this is helpful or not to you.

A water filter is only going to catch free floating particles and sediments. To change the quality of your water, you need a softener or other type of treatment. So far as a Kinetico softener, they are no more efficient than any other softener. It takes a certain amount of salt to remove hardness. Salt usage is based on hardness and is programed into the system. The salt is only a release agent for when it cycles, which is then back flushed to a drain. It makes the media inside the cylinder release what it has collected. They like to sell the Kenetico system as it uses no electricity. The only electricity used by a regular system is for the clock timer and power to open and close the valves during a cycle. Maybe $1.00 worth per year. Wasting your money if you get a Kinetico system. Any good softener would be maybe 1/3 the cost. You should use a water filter ahead of any softener to make sure no particles enter the valves.

Believe this is the one I have. Fleck is one of the best and serviced by just about anyone (if ever needed). Never mentioned that I'm on well water.
