One day several years ago, the guy next to me on the range had me hit his Adams A2OS senior 7 iron. It looked like an offset iron in the front but had a hybrid back. I hit it high and straight with no effort. I bought a used set but the shafts were like noodles. You could only get this style of 7 iron in the senior flex set.
Ever since then I've wanted iron-hybrids like that, with offset just like irons. I've tried:
Tour Edge Bazooka somethings. They had a super cheap graphite shaft that I measured at 8.something torque. The ball just wanted to go left.
Launcher HB irons. They just wanted to go left.
I keep looking for this type of iron, like the Wilson Launchpad that Chuck is selling right now. But I guess my tests already show that for me, they will want to go left. I think this is because the COG is so far behind the shaft. The COG wants to get in line with the shaft during the swing. So the head twists the shaft to the left. That's my theory anyway.
There must be a reason that the typical Adams mixed set had the hybrids shaped like regular hybrids. Same for the Cobra sets. ???
I've also owned the PP5000 and System Q from Hireko. And the Dynacraft Avatar, which was shaped like their current Acer XDS. None of them made it for me but that's not a knock on them. The first two were shaped like hybrids, and the Avatar was shaped like an offset iron.
I don't like to have a lot of different setup looks in the bag. That has been part of the appeal of finding a hybrid that sits like an offset iron. But I think I'm done looking for that.
Edit: Here is an A2OS senior set. Notice how the 6 & 7 are the offset iron style, but the 4 & 5 are normal hybrids.
