I was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia for 4 years back from '87 to '91.

One winter morning we had a light dusting, almost unmeasurable, the only snow I can remember during my entire time there... they closed the entire post down, and the snow wasn't even sticking on the roads, it was melting upon impact. LOL

Spent 4 years in the military. They made some ridiculous mandatory orders that affected many thousands of personnel on the spur of the moment. I never did understand the military way of thinking. Of course they never understood my way of thinking either. lol

Rain and wet snow mixed this morning at 35Β° F for the most part. Warmer weather is coming back and the price line in the GolfNow reflects the forecast, going higher for the rest of the week. I'd bet still will have more than half of the tee sheets empty.....

Had a tee time this morning, but it is 28F right now (9:10am) and won't get to 40 F today. Plus some wind and although 15-20 years ago I would be going out to play the cold just knocks me out these days. Our group has an agreement. If it is under 40* with wind or rain we do not play anymore.

Hard to imagine that only two people died late Friday night amidst all of that carnage on I-95 that was captured via video. The tanker-truck driver, sadly, wasn't one of the lucky ones.

Another reminder to not take anything for granted.

It's just the way the military was, and probably still is. My motto back then was this:

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, have done so much with so little, that we can do damned near anything with nothing at all.

I'd like to take credit for that, but it was passed along during the ages, and probably originated from some unfortunate grunt who was hunkered down in freezing weather in Europe during WWII, hoping merely to get some dry socks and a warm meal.

Funny how some things never change.

Yeah, saw that. Dude was very brave, maybe even a little crazy, to capture that from the close quarters he was observing.

People just don't realize what can happen when the temperatures drop below freezing, especially when there's moisture in the air and how that impacts bridges and overpasses.

About 20 years ago, my wife and I were traveling in Virginia during what was an ordinary winter day. It was cold, around 30ΒΊ outside. Suddenly we started getting into some sprinkles/rain on the Interstate we were traveling on. I knew it was right around the threshold of freezing once it hit the pavement, and slowed my speed down from 55 to about 35. Yet people continued to pass me like I was standing still, and this was right as it was starting to get dark. Hell - I could see the sheen starting to form on the highway reflecting off of the taillights of the cars ahead of me, so I knew it wasn't safe. I had just mentioned to my wife, "These people are crazy... they have to understand that these surfaces are starting to ice over?!

Two minutes later, I watched a van from the other side in the North-bound lane spinning out of control... will never forget seeing their headlights doing these uncontrollable 360ΒΊ donuts, as though someone had affixed flashlights on a merry-go-round. That van careened off the road into the median, fortunately avoiding the south-bound traffic and not creating a huge pileup on their side of the northbound Interstate.

God was watching over those people that day. And I can guarantee you that when you experience that - you will never take driving in winter weather situations for granted, ever again!

People just assume too much. One of the most dangerous things we will do, even during the best driving conditions during the summer months, is get behind the wheel of a vehicle and take to the road. I have spent the last 10 years preaching this to my two (now adult) children, and hopefully some of that preaching has stuck with them.

I'm praying anyway. My daughter is heading to Canada tomorrow with her boyfriend, a 3-day getaway and a hockey game to be enjoyed. Just this evening, I had 4 brand-new tires put on her car... just in hopes that should she find herself in a bad situation - at least the traction on her tires would be as good as possible.

Sometimes you just have to put some salve on the knees from the sores originating from all the praying you do for your kids when they travel this time of year.

P.....here is one I can take credit for:

In war a Hero takes one step forward
A Coward takes one step back
          A Soldier stays in step

          Words by AlmoDesigns. Lol

            Bangoman

Bang, I'll take your word for it. A soldier stays in step... love it.

That said, I consider myself very blessed that despite spending 4 years on active duty, then another 6 years in the army reserves - I was never deployed downrange. Imagine that - a decade of my adult life, in a profession that exists for the very purpose of defending our country and way of life, during some very trying and uncertain times no less, I was never put in a situation that forced me to put another human being in the crosshairs of my rifle.

To say that I was blessed, literally, is an understatement.

God Bless our troops, whether they're driving on slick roads to spend the holidays with their families back home, or hunkered down in an outpost somewhere in Syria trying to simply do their jobs and get back home to those that love and miss them.

We have sooooo much to be thankful for. Hopefully some of us realize it. πŸ˜‰

I don't even like the county roads this time of year that are plowed....stretches are still snow covered and slick. Dunno what possessed me to take the back roads coming home from a late appt....stick to the hwy.

When I joined I had no idea a war was going on........I just wanted to get away from home! LOL

Made it to 39 here....actually felt warm...we are supposed to get a wintery mix on Xmas day....should be interesting.

                ode
Warmed up here a bit, but only got close to 30. Not sure how you got it nicer than we had. Still, a much nicer day than any the past week. Calling for around 50 on Christmas day and the following day. The forecast for the next 2 weeks doesn't show much under 30 for the highs. Can't beat that.

Did I mention the rain for those 50* days.πŸ˜’

Not sure, weather.Com and AccuWeather said 37, bUT my official weather man is my cars thermometer, which said 39 when I got in it at 245πŸ™‚ anyways says 45 for xmas, so thereπŸ™‚ betcha my car will say 55!

ode Yeah, my car is pretty accurate also, esp. when traveling around a wide metro area like here. Temps can range 4-6 degrees just 'across town'. Rain and snow is the same here; can be raining like the devil at work, but when I get home, about 8 mi., it might be dry. They take the 'official' temp/rainfall/snowfall at the airport here, iirc. It's only a couple mi. south of me, but sometimes that couple mi. makes a diff in the weather, one place to another. They say 8" of snow. But I shovel at least 12 here!!

                    37Β° to 46Β° , and DRY.
I'll see if there is any deal on the golfnow.

I did get out today, when I arrived at the golf course it was still dark at 7:30 A.M. being the Winter Solstice day.
Then the golf course showed up like a grey ghost, frosted from tee to green. Was told the first tee time was 8 A.M. and surprised to see a few other golfers already practice pitching at the secondary practice green ( the large practice green was closed due to frost ).

This was the day, we had to clean the ice built up on the shoes before each shot. When the golf balls landed on the green it gave a hollow sound having a crust of hard shell frozen on top of the surface.
Sun actually came out on the back nine. Warm under the sun but the ground became soft and muddy after the softening.

Overcast and foggy this morning. Sunny and a high of 60* this afternoon. Leaving now for my 10am tee time.

Leaving for Sebring Florida tonight to take the wife and daughter to visit the MIL. 80-83* for the next 10 days. Only another 5-7 years until retirement..... πŸ˜‰
