[deleted] that sounds like plugs. The worst I've ever done was 2 of those. Easy to do as long as you have an air compressor. Patches NORMALLY require the tire to come off the rim, get the inside sanded a little bit so the patch and adhesive have something to latch onto.
As far as tire damage, I've ended up with a flat tire on my truck. I found the leak, it was a perfect round hole in the tread. I didn't want to put the spare on if I didn't have to. I dug through my crap tool bag and found a couple screws, one of those just happened to be the right size to screw in and hold pressure, so I did that and drove home from the barn. Next morning I drove to the tire shop, tire was holding 60psi. They saw that and said here's your problem a screw. I replied nope, that screw allowed me to get home last night and here this morning. I put that into the empty hole.
Years before that when I was just learning how to replace tires, one of the guys I worked with came in and had me remove the tire from his truck as he had a flat, and there was 6" of rebar sticking out. Inside the tire was another 2' wrapped around the wheel. He had no idea it was that big of a piece.
