That casino was built after i left, coming back to mainland to finish my college. Local University ( Singapore U. and S.P. U) did not recognize American high School diploma, so we had to go back to another year mod high school ( they call the senior year as lower 6 and upper 6 ) had to pass and score well in the entrance exam ( the Cambridge certificate, British system ). None of my classmates went that route , most of them returned home for higher education and a few went into trade immediately. Yes, one has to purchase an existing license plate number in order to buy a car there. Kind of reversing the process of owning a plate before one can own a vehicle. Their way of controlling the numbers of motor vehicles on the roadway. Remembering every new car was about twice the price we see here, form the 110% import tariff ( Donald Trump can learn from that , LOL ), I did not feel the restriction while I was there, until back in the States did I realized how their system run comparing to ours. Locals can qualify for government housing, a one or two bedroom apartment at below market price through their qualifying system. Any citizen or resident can qualify either with low income or age related program. Things must have changed quite a bit since I left in the 70s. Hear one of our favorite spot was torn down, moved to an organized spot. As students we frequent the Newton Circle for street food. Our favorite dish was either the ~Hainan chicken rice or fried rice noodles with spicy sweet sauce. Taking a taxi or bus there was no big deal. The use plastic bag ( back then ) filled with chipped ice and soda or juice with a straw sticking out the top. So after lunch, everyone will carry a plastic bag full of iced drink walking to bus stop. My favorite was Kickapoo Joy Juice, a popular, caffeinated citrus-flavored carbonated soft drink widely available in Singapore. Later we graduated to another local favorite, half and half of chilled draft beer with 7 ups/sprite.
