This is the planned project for this weekend. Been playing the Maltby STi2 for 7+ months, when I realized I had not shot par or better with them. I doubt it was the iron's fault, but that stat alone means it is time for a change. Thought about complete sets or heads only, but then I found some new shafts on ebay that I have always liked (Penley IMS 105 6.0s) and decided I would start there. I also have a set of pulls (Penley IMS 105 5.5s) that somebody had done the 0.370" to 0.355" adjustment to go into Pings. I pulled them, thinking I'd eventually get other taper heads.
The head hunt started with the great Maltby TS1/TS2. But I have had both of those previously. Looked at several others, but really started to think about the New Level heads. At $80 each though, it was a pretty big jump from the $50 Maltby. No tax and free shipping was in NLs favor. After signing up for their e-mail list, found out that they would have sales, and jumped on a $100 off of $600 purchase, which worked out for 8 heads. Purchased the 902 forged irons (4-pw) and a 50 degree M wedge.
I planned to someday add 2 more wedges. Someday was quick, as I found someone selling a nice 54/58 set with C Tapers on ebay. Shafts were pulled and will be resold eventually.
The plan is to use the new Penley 6.0s in the 4i-9i, and then the Penley 5.5 pulls in the pw,50,54,58. Fortunately, the pulled Penley were from a set that was 1" long, so I had lots of wiggle room. Had to tip trim 1" to get the taper section off, and then 1" more to get them close to 6.0. Had plenty of parallel tip to do this.
Did the 54 and 58 today. Surprised that even at 35.5" with no tip weight, these still came in at D5. The IMS shafts must be really tip heavy shafts.
More to come when I work on the remaining irons....
