sorry, I prefer realistic golf movies. no room for fantasies.
Tin Cup
- Edited
Listened to an old podcast (2018) with the writer of Tin Cup - Ron Shelton. Some great insights. This guy also wrote Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump, etc.
He always wanted to write a golf movie, but needed a hook. Chip Beck laying up at the '93 Masters gave him the idea - write a story about a guy that cannot lay up. The idea that what makes someone great can also be his downfall.
Also, they were failing at getting any PGA Pros involved; then they turned to McCord. Instead of calling the agents, McCord called the player's wives. ''We will cover the costs and you will get dinner with Kevin Costner". Suddenly they had PGA Pros involved.
hobbit - awesome back story!
Not a fan of fantasy golf movies either, "The Greatest Game Ever Played"" was by far the best. The guy who played Vardon in the movie was the best. Made me want to read about the real Vardon, though.
So, y'all think the story of Francis Quimet is a fantasy? Hmmm....
Tin Cup was pretty good, "Still goin". Greatest Game was good. Never could get into Bagger Vance and the whole mystical thing. The guy that played Bobby Jones in that one sure had a good swing though.
Ack8236 Which Bobby Jones movie? I think there were two. There was one with Matt Damon (Bagger Vance maybe?) and then the other movie about Jones. I don't remember the name of either now.
My take on BV was that he was a helping(or guardian) angel for Jack Lemmon's character.
There was another movie about a little kid, his father, and country club bigotry or something. Can't recall the name of it.
Ringoblack I was talking about the Bobby Jones character in Bagger Vance, wasn't a major character but that guy had a great looking swing. There is a movie about bobby Jones with Jim Caviezel as Jones. I thought that was a pretty good movie also.
Ack8236 I agree the BV Bobby Jones was a better Jones than the one in the movie about Jones.
Indiana Jones > Bobby Jones
Tin Cup > Tin Men
Did someone say Happy Gilmore?
