A lot of the players and commentators were saying early last week that the greens at the course were unusually fast at the start of the tournament this year and that they normally start out a little softer and firm up as the tournament progresses. While I've never really noticed that before, if it is true I wonder if it was an attempt to neutralize bomb and gouge. They made the greens so that it would be no easier to stop a 100 yard shot in the right spot as it was to stop an 150 yard shot in the right spot. I know some of the greens were designed that way with slopes and pin placements (like 13 and 15) and have always been that way to encourage players to go for it rather than lay up, but it seems like many par 4s were set up that way as well.
