Old....I mean REALLY old Spalding irons were threaded and took special shafts that were threaded as well. They
were left-hand thread, so each time you hit a shot, I suppose you were tightening the threads a fraction. They used glue of some kind as well, but this was before epoxies. Spalding probably did this for the same reason several
manufacturers (Hogan, for example!) pinned their shafts to the heads. The biggest problem with removing those
Spaldings heads/shafts was just knowing that's what they had done. Once you knew to turn the heads clockwise
after heating, it was not usually a problem.
