An Overhaul to the PGA TOUR is Coming in 2028
"Ahead of CEO Brian Rolapp's press conference at the Travelers Championship on Tuesday, the PGA TOUR unveiled widespread changes coming to the league in 2028.
As Rolapp announced at THE PLAYERS back in March, there will be two levels of competition: one for the best players in the world, and one of players hoping to earn their way to the top, as well as young and rising talent.
There's a lot of information to go through, so I wanted to break it down into digestible segments. Let's dive in.
PGA TOUR Championship Series.
The season will run February through August.
There will be 23-24 events, including THE PLAYERS, the four major championships, playoff events, and that year’s team event (Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup).
120-player fields, 36-holes cuts (top 65 and ties), and purses of at least $20 million.
As for membership, a minimum of 90 players will be retained from the prior season’s point list, and 20 spots will be used for promotions from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be decided later this year. One note: there will be no alternate list.
Outside of THE PLAYERS, the major championships, the playoff events, and the Presidents Cup, 10 of the expected 15 events have already been lined up. The remaining events will be filled by existing events or new markets. Those new markets under consideration include Boston, Denver, New York,
The full playoff format has yet to be decided, but match play will be involved in the postseason. Plus, the TOUR Championship will be held across a rotation of courses, many of which the TOUR has never been to before. Full details on format and locations will come at a later date.
- There is no requirement for members to play in every event.
PGA TOUR Challenger Series
Events will be 72 holes with a 36-hole cut (top 65 and ties), including amateurs, and a purse of at least $4 million.
Fields will fill up to 144, but those can be shrunk depending on a number of factors, including available daylight.
Minimum of 20 events, with a schedule running concurrently with the Championship Series.
A membership comprised of emerging talent and players looking to earn their way onto the Championship Series
Challenger events will be held at venues that have traditionally hosted the PGA TOUR.
Approximately seven events will be held during Championship Series off weeks, and those will have increased consequence, benefits and exposure.
Membership eligibility and exemption criteria will be finalized later this year
PGA TOUR Championship Series and PGA TOUR Challenger Series members will be eligible to compete only within their respective series.
Promotion and Relegation
- Players who fail to keep their Championship Series status can regain eligibility via a “last chance series.” The “last chance” series will consist of 4-6 events in the fall. Players who are relegated from the Championship Series and fail to make it through the “last chance” series will be eligible for the Challenger Series the following season. More information on the “last chance” series to come later this year.
Fall Schedule
- The new fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the PGA TOUR Championship Series. These events will be delivered with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance.
Other Information
Q-School will continue, and it will provide access to the PGA TOUR ecosystem (PGA TOUR Challenger Series, “last chance” series, and developmental pathways). More information coming at a later date.
The PGA TOUR’s developmental pathways—Korn Ferry Tour, PGA TOUR Americas, PGA TOUR University—aren’t going anywhere. Their future will be decided on at a later date."
