maybe it has nothing to do with PC or perpetual offense but simply thinking that putting ANYONE (as a group of people) down as the punchline of a joke due to a circumstance of their birth they have no control over is simply not what good people do.

I tend to prefer jokes that punch upwards, not downward. Punching downward is what unoriginal, privileged, and otherwise dickheaded people do, because they are... dickheads and can't do better.
Again, he has a daughter. By doing this, he's literally telling her she can't be as good as a man.
Of course, he was a terrible husband, why would anyone think he should be a good father.
