No way should that have been a drop. They all do that, show the official how they may hit the wall, while holding the club at the very tip of the grip. Then after the drop, choke down several inches.

There was so much 'tamping' going on this week I thought it was period week for all their wives.

Spuzz On initial look, it didn't appear that the ball was close enough to the wall to interfere with his backswing. Curiously, instead of dwelling on the variables of an official ruling that could affect the immediate outcome of a tournament, the TV broadcast didn't even show the ball position or most of the rules discussion, just Rory marking and dropping a ball on a significantly lesser slope than the initial position it came to rest. Perfectly fine if that was actually the valid point of nearest relief and relief was appropriate, but when I first saw it, it looked like there was 3 to 4 feet between the ball and the wall. I believe that if he took a stance angled with the slope like he would if the shot were to be played from the initial spot, there would've been plenty of clearance. I suppose a player is allowed to take whatever stance he feels like even if it is not standard for the shot, but without seeing him demonstrate the interference that is hard to interpret.

The issue was him placing the ball and after it sunk straight down, determining that it "moved" and replacing it (twice I think) until he got it tee'd up just right.
Of course, having a Rules Official there means it's all ok, unless you are Pat Reed of course.

Spuzz Oh. I noticed that too and it looked like the ball did go straight down into the rough on the initial placement, but since the official was hovering over it I assumed he told Rory to place it again. I still would've liked a little more exposition of the whole thing by the TV folks though.

I have no issue with relief. I don't think stands/barrier should be something he has to deal with even if there is a little clearance....if it's reasonable he would hit it he should get relief. Re: the drop and subsequent drop, it moved closer to the hole so he gets to "place", if the ball moves after placing he gets to replace, no? It's not like he'd choose to place it at the bottom of the grass he's placing on, lol. I don't see it any different then when they get to the point of placing and even then it moves closer to hole, they have to pick a point where they can get the ball to stay put.

Riiiight. It ALWAYS moves closer to hole, in case you've never noticed. If it does not, you'll then see a certain look of disgust on the players face from their 'bad' drop. How else are you going to get the perfect lie you need for an $18M shot? Playing it as it were, he had small chance of getting up/down from deep down, that close.
Rules are rules though, and they are made to be f'd with.

raggmann54 Even with the rules official right there, what would it look like if he admonished Rory for what he was trying to do/did do? And Rory knew full well he was taking advantage of the official, not just the rules. jmo, unbiased of course.

How so?
Rory did exactly what the rules official told him to do, NOT the other way around.
(I had to watch the replay over and over to see what some of you guys are chirping about)
He had to place the ball (3 times BTW) where it FIRST landed the second time he dropped the ball and it rolled
outside his free relief tee marker.
ALL determined by the rules official who was standing right there directing the drop and placement of his ball.

Bottom line, when you start the day as Scheffler did with a 6 stroke lead....YOU SHOULD WIN!!! IMO

Sneakylong I'll wait til I read it from him, as he did say HE will be the one to confirm, but nowhere can I find evidence that Smith and some of those mentioned have 'said' they are going. Nieman's people did confirm his move yesterday. All others are heresay at this minute, from reporters jumping on the bandwagon, much the same as the article your link is from. jmo

These media places are like weathermen......gotta be 1st....whether it happens or not.

There also is no truth to the rumors of my signing. I will be posting it here on GB 1st. If/when it happens.
