I would leave Oklahoma if I felt it was necessary, but not sure that will happen while our parents are still alive. As a teacher I could probably find work just about anywhere.

I do know 2 young families with children that have basically gone off the grid in the USA. However, they did not leave the USA. Basically they have chosen a different lifestyle. I thought at first "this won't last." It appears I was wrong. They have settled in providing the majority of their own needs, love their daily life and at least from my last contact have zero desire to return to their former situation.

I'm in NY and would definitely want to retire elsewhere in the US. FInancially, it makes sense. A home in the Carolinas, Tennessee of the same size is maybe 25-35% cheaper in a similar community, and the real estate taxes are about 75% less. Paying $1,000+ a month in real estate taxes takes a big chunk out of retirement. My wife is less enthusiastic about it, but her mother is still around and settled nearby. My parents are gone, and my sister is about 100 miles away and we haven't seen her in over a year.

Only lived in 6 states so far and have never had a residence outside of the U.S., Don't mind the idea of moving as I'm of the belief that people are much the same everywhere. I would prefer to retire to another location as the Memphis area is pretty flat and I'd rather be in the hills or mountains, or near a beach if not. Don't think I ever will as my wife's emotional ties to the area seem too strong for me to overcome.

I’ve heard Bermuda is nice. Sister and BIL raved about it. I love Florida though. Golf year round and never have to shovel snow or scrape the windshield. 😎

We live in the best country in the world. I would never leave it, but I would most certainly leave Connecticut. High taxes, really no wonderful "change of seasons " anymore with little to do or get excited about. Family considerations may make a possible move south not an option for me. Maybe, some sort of snowbird arrangement would suffice though.

I wonder about that. Study after study shows this not to be the case anymore, and hasn't been for a long time.

The grass is greener point was brought up, by Pete, I believe. That's a fair point but not many of us actually know if that's true.

Canada ranks at the top of best countries to live. Finland and Germany rounded out this list from USNews. US isn't even Top 10. US ranked 15th, up two spots from 17, in 2019.

Toulon And did you notice all of those on your list are small countries and not even minor players on the world stage? You don't see China, Russia, India on that list. We have the best standard of living of any large country in the world. Imagine if we kept most of our money at home instead of being the world's policeman? We've all seen the graph of how much the US is spending on Americans for covid relief and the much bigger number we're sending worldwide.

For sure on medical care. Big proponent of universal HC. Not sure about climate. Lots of places I'd rather be based solely on climate. I'd rather stay in the US than go to Canada's climate.

I think about this kind of thing when we travel from TX to WA. WA has far better amenities than Texas does, and it's not close. The scenery, alone, smashes Texas. Would love living there, but, right now, WA is one of the last places I'd want to be. Happy to be a Texan, right now.

Other than Canada, those Scandinavian countries and the 2 Down Under are very restrictive on immigration so that's what jumped out at me.

Climate? That assisted Canada's ranking?

Forbes has neither the US nor Canada in it's Top 9 places to live in their own ranking system.

I don't know about the Canadian health care system other than a couple of Docs we have in Topeka emigrated from Canada (I play golf and I've done financial/retirement planning work for him). They hated the system. I also don't hear of Americans going to Canada for their medical care but I read of Canadians (and persons from around the world) coming to the US (pre-pandemic). We do have a store here called Canada Drugs that seems to always be busy. I like our healthcare and I always provided it for my employees.

I think that is more reflective of how it used to be. Have you heard that much recently? I get it. America probably WAS all these things. It doesn't take long to erode all the things we all thought about this country.

If I could go back to the America from my childhood, I would. This society today is not one I would really want to bring kids into.

To me, this country has been on an exponentially increasing decline the last several years. Has nothing to do with who is in WH. Just a general degradation of morality, ethics, etc. That won't be turning around anytime soon, if ever. We're a very me-first country and growing more and more politically correct where censorship is becoming king.

It is not okay to be certain things in America. I know some will chime in and mention a bunch of bad things nobody should be but I'm not referring to any of those.

i have had to seek emergency care on a fishing trip to Ontario and I have to say that it was fast, efficient,
professional and cost me near nothing based on my Blue Shield insurance. In general though, that is the
only time I've had to use their system in over 40 years of annual trips. Canadians I've met there have
mixed feelings about it. I have heard of long wait times for scans, etc. The Canadians should chime in....

Eguller We were in France in 2019 and one of the people in our tour group injured his leg high on Mont Ste. Michel in France. They had to bring him down and take him in an ambulance to the nearest hospital about 30 miles away. When it was time to discharge him, they had no idea how to bill him and told him to just go.

Par4QC We have 50 states we are allowed to just roam around aimlessly in, with very few restrictions. Try that in most other countries

Believe it or not the thing that's most irritating in the US is the open container laws. I have a house in Greece and I've traveled greatly, In Europe I can open a beer and "roam around aimlessly" with impunity.
