sdandrea1 The really bad thing about munis is that they have wayyyy too many outings all summer. Every weekend(Fr-Su) 1-2 are doing them, most on the same days. They are all shotgun and will take the whole day. A lot of courses in this area, but also a ton of golfers. And the rates are skyrocketing quickly.
otoh, they keep them up nicely, for the most part. Even with all the rain we've had, they are in great shape.
sdandrea1 I'm not retired, but because we are fortunate enough to have more than a half-dozen municipal courses and at least another dozen privately owned public access courses in the Memphis area this little course gets overlooked and you can stop in and play almost any time without calling ahead. Not so at the other courses, but there are enough of them that the play gets spread out and there aren't too many tournaments on any given course during the year. That little nine hole course has issues in that the longest of the four par 3 holes is only 138 yards, the greens are tiny and fairly coarse bermuda, and a lot of people hate the secondary rough, which is allowed to grow to 5 inches or more. Besides trees, the rough is the only protection the course has, but I think it is allowed to grow as much to save on maintenance costs as it is strategic. Our group usually loses a handful of balls in the rough even though we know, within a few yards, where the ball is. But it is in a good location for us to meet after work and can't beat the price.
I lived in Austin, TX, Colorado Springs, and Greenville, SC in my former life. All had at least one muni that was decent, easy and fun. I miss 'em.

Not necessarily. We have one city owned course. They have a morning set aside for men's league, ladies league and seniors league. You can't get a tee time before noon on any of those three days even if only a few show up to play league stuff so the course just sits empty for hours each day.
sdandrea1 Well, then there is that. 
But, I do not understand the shotgun start thing, for every outing. The course loses a lot of revenue. They won't let anyone out within 4 hrs. of the start, unless playing only 9 holes. The outing rounds are typically 5-6 hrs. long, and they don't start til around 11-12. While these courses are closed to the public, there are a lot of other courses, but most will not let singles out, nor will they even give them a tee time. They will say to come on out and we'll see if we can get you on.
Pendleton Golf Club, Ladysmith, VA. This place is nearly always in good shape and has some nice width to it.
The range last night
Periodically, I organize a group of guys for a golf weekend in Bella Vista, Arkansas and we were there last month for 3 days. Scotsdale Golf Course is always in my rota due to the unique links-style layout on the front and elevation changes on the back. This is #15 from the blue tees and about a 180 yards. This year, two of the guys in my foursome were within 12 feet with their tee balls! I was on the fringe short and right - it is beautiful in this little area of our USA. This particular picture was taken 3 years ago at a previous outing because we were hustling this year to beat an approaching rain shower so there wasn't time for a photo op.
