Rare condor sighting in Oakland, Ca

I have played this hole. From the WHITES it is 680 yards. Yes there is a lot of downhill and I did hit a 400+ yard drive one time that followed the shape of the hole and bounded down the hill, but this is amazing! I would love to know how far he was from the hole for his second shot.

December 10th, one of our lifelong resident golfers, Kevin Pon recorded a 2 on Hole #18 Par 6. (-4) on a hole is called a CONDOR and is so extremely rare that there have not been odds calculated to hit a Condor.
After doing some research through articles posted by the PGA, Kevin Pon is the 5th person to hit a Condor. The first 4 Condors recorded were all scores of (1) on Par 5's, but never a 2 on a Par 6.
Congratulations to Kevin Pon!!! Ending 2020 on a high note!

Yep, played that course many times when I was stationed at NAS Alameda. The 18th hole is a monster, only managed to get down into the valley a handful of times. Congrats Kevin!

I used to hike this course every week. My best is an eagle four on 18.

I have played the course a handful of time (maybe 10) and generally speaking, I will lose my tee shot ball. It goes right and into the junk or I hook it left and into the OB. Obviously you want to crank one out there and because of that, it makes it a little more difficult and you tend to screw it up. At least that is my observation. I did have one time where I hit a nice draw that followed the shape of the hole and took the slope and ended up being a 415 yard drive (measured straight with the GPS, so following the shape of the hole, more like 450). I only ended up with a birdie as I was hitting my second on the downslope and didn't hit it well. My buddy hit a decent drive and ended up chipping in from behind the green for an eagle 4.

SVonhof seems counter-intuitive to me. Par 6 - 680......could play safe all day long and par it easy, possibly get on in 3 and have a chance at eagle. Obviously it's a mind f()ck, given the total yardage and feeling like you need to pound one out there. That being said.....I'd love to have a crack at that hole, 10 times playing safe, 10 times going after it!

SVonhof Looks pretty cool. I can't keep thinking about some of the golfers at Typhoon's course racing straight down the hill ignoring the back-and-forth cart path.🤣

You mentioned your Navy days, I haven't played many Navy course but a few, all of them had holes next to the runway (no fence), and one course had a Par 3 where you hit through the sequential flashers on very short final. Any 16 year old would love both courses for fun times and hitting balls at jets.

Farmstead in Myrtle Beach ( just N of really) has a par 6 as the 18th hole, from the blues it plays a relatively short 6566 yards and the 18th plays 712 yards.

I have played it a couple times and made a 5 both times.

I finally started looking at my NCGA magazine and they talked about this condor and they are saying they don't recognize it as a condor.

While we're still amazed and tip our hat at the feat, after further review, the NCGA has determined that the score of 2 on the hole was technically an albatross or double-eagle and not a condor. While it is listed as a par 6 on the scorecard, the USGA states for a hole to qualify as a par 6, it must "play" in excess of 690 yards for men/590 yards for women. And if you have ever teed it up at Lake Chabot, you know that the 18th hole falls well short of this standard. Second shots tend to reach the bottom of the mountainous hill with great regularity, leaving no more than an 80-100 yard third shot for men and women alike. A phenomenal accomplishment, but a bird of a different feather.

Not sure if it's still in play, there was a 600 yard par 6 not too far away. Made a 90° dogleg left about 200 yards out. Not being a big hitter, usually did not go well for me.
