Ok, I know the lofts are different so let’s not bring it up.
I took my Ping ie1 irons with the modus 105 shafts out of Nick’s bag today to hit. I used out GC2.
I wanted to see how they compared to our pros Titleist 718 T-mb irons with the Nippon 980 or something shaft. Basically the same on all fronts.
Next I wanted to compare them to my Nike Vapor pro combos with the DGpro shafts. Heavier combo than the Ping/modus 105. Again just about the same which seemed odd.
A kid comes in for his lesson, has a set of TM p790 with modus shafts. I ask him which modus... he has no idea. I take the 7 iron and see it’s the Modus 130... rare to find. I was psyched! So this combo is not like anything I’m hitting so I wanted to see what kid of numbers I’d get...
6 mph more ball speed, 2 degrees lower launch ( which according to our Trackman charts is optimal for PGA Tour) but spin was 600 rpm lower. Distance... 19 more yards of carry and the same ball height... all compared to the Nike and Ping.
You could really tell the ball is jumping off the face. I liked the lower launch because it increases my ball speed. I didn’t like the low spin for a 75 foot ball height. It would be interesting to see it outside. Accuracy was fine.... I’ll have to look into the modus shaft.
One thing I dislike about the modus 105 is the occasional high and right iron shots that come out of nowhere. Even on the launch monitor...95 feet high and nowhere. That’s mostly the reason I’ve stuck with the Nikes... you don’t see that shot with the DGpro shaft.
