Store-bought hips?

Doc told me yesterday that I may need a hip implant soon, due to bone-on-bone arthritis. Anyone have any experience with this, good bad or indifferent? How long were you hospitalized, how long before you could play golf again, that kind of stuff.

Many of my friends had the hip surgery, some replaced one and some double barrel.

Important thing is the rehab after the surgery. I have a friend whom got out of the bed and tried to walk around the room the first day after the surgery. He is back to near 100% recovery.

Interesting news learned last week about Knee replacement which may have some impact on the hips and other joints in the human body. One guy whom told me he was going to get the new procedure to harvest Stem cell from his own body and inject it back into his knee to avoid replacement. Hid surgeon told him the worst case out of hundreds of his patients was 85% recovery. His surgeon also said with the progression of this method and future FDA approval, there would be no replacement for joint in about 10-15 years.
This guy was an active skier and involved in other sports like cycling ...., during his 67 years he also had a double bypass and a hip replacement about 5 years ago.

Coworker of mine had double hip replacement for that same reason. She was back walking relatively normally in about 2 months. Her doc told her she'd back to 100% mobility in 8-12 months. She's anything but the poster child for good health, so it would hopefully be a much quicker recovery for you.

Played golf one time with a guy who had the surgery 3 weeks earlier.

The training of your Orthopedic Dr. is paramount.
If your Dr. Knows who Dr. Keggi is (pioneered hip replacement) then you are in good hands.

Had x-rays last Monday, same here. Orthepedic appointment next Monday. Pain is debilitating and pretty much constant, even when I TRY to sleep. Want it gone, whatever it takes.

Have a good friend who had both replaced this year. Says it's the best thing he's had happen to him. He says he forgot what sleep was. I know the feeling.

Age 60. Took a nasty fall about 7-8 years ago and my left hip has never been the same. Pain has been horrible at times (barely able to walk) and manageable other times. Went in for x-rays 3 months ago and determined to have severe osteoarthitis in my left hip. No cartlidge left, only bone on bone. I'm taking an inflammatory, Vitamin D, and Glucosomine/MSM. Also, got some lotion with cannabis (I'm in Oregon where it is legal) and the relief has been pretty remarkable. The relief lasts about 3-4 hours, enough for a round of golf. Hip replacement is in my future, but I will try to wait until I'm 65 so Medicare pays for it. We shall see...

What anti inflammatory? I'd buy cannabis if I could afford it or had a connection, I don't care if it's legal or not, but I can't and don't at this point.

Btw, I'm only 51 yrs old and this has, pretty much, shut me down outside work. I take 5 advil, 1st thing, when I get up in the morning and a Vicodin on the way to work and that don't completely mask the pain, but I get through. I don't sleep anymore, I take short naps. I can't play golf or even shoot hoops with my kid. It fucking sucks. Like I need something else to be depressed about. If I was a horse.....

Can't help you with the pain you're in right now but make sure you look for a surgeon that will do the hip replacement via the anterior approach rather than the posterior approach. My fiancée had the anterior approach (incision made about even with the side seam in your pants just behind the FRONT pocket opening) and she was up & walking 3hrs later with no cane, no walker, just a bit of arm holding from the physical therapist. She even did a couple stairs.

The old school posterior approach cuts into you right around the middle of your BACK pocket, meaning there's a lot of muscle that has to be cut. The surgeon is able to just move muscle aside when using the anterior approach.

Post OP, she never took any pain meds, never used a cane or walker and said she wished she had done the surgery sooner. Best of luck, I saw the pain she was in & wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Good luck. I'm probably a few years away yet, but it's definitely letting me know that it's not that far off. Getting tougher for me to put a sock on my right foot, tie my right shoe, etc...

A golf buddy of mine struggled with a bum hip for several years, finally got it replaced four years or so ago. He had it done in the early part of the winter, so when the golf season started that April - he was 100 percent, no issues. So probably a three month recovery.

I don't play with him as much these days, but when I do I ask him how his new hip is doing. "Ah, man... it's great. It's like I'm a new person. Only regret I have is I wish I'd had it done sooner, I needlessly endured a lot of pain and discomfort putting it off as long as I did."

That's something I left out. Don't take it for granted. It's a very painful process for me in the morning. I've even had my wife do it a couple times....with wrath! Best to just have her put it on me before i go to bed. Pathetic.

Not sure how much the brand matters. Find a surgeon with a good reputation if your insurance or budget allows for it and follow the rehab program religiously. I used to work for Smith & Nephew and (during the time I worked there) felt their product quality was top notch. However, most surgeons and hospitals are trained on, and aligned with, specific brands and you are almost certainly best off finding the best surgeon rather than focus on the brand.

Another thing that is helping me is doing a series of stretching exercises at least four times a week. It's called "Egoscue Pain Free Workout" on a DVD. It's a quasi-yoga type exercise series that not only targets the hips but also the rest of your body. It's definitely helping to make me stronger and more flexible. There are some mornings when I get out of bed and can't walk due to the sharp pain in my hip. I have to stretch it out for a couple of minutes before I can go. It seems like the muscles around the hip bunch up and tighten during the night, causing the nerves to fry. But these exercises are helping to stretch out those muscles/tendons. There's still pain, but less so than before. I've also found putting a heating pad on my hip helps, too. It's all about managing the pain until I go get a new hip. I admit that when I first started going though this ordeal I got pretty depressed. But the combination of exercising, meds, cannabis lotion and most importantly a positive attitude is making it at least tolerable. I feel your pain...literally.

-My wife (68) just got a new hip on Sept. 20th and it's been a long recovery so far. Her problem was that because she had a blood clot behind her knee when she had a knee replace a few years ago, the Dr. prescribed warfarin to thin her blood. It was supposed to help avoid another blood clot. On the other hand it caused her to bleed internally at the incision site. Her whole leg swelled up with fluid and caused so much pain that I ended up taking her to the emergency room. The emergency room Dr. was worried that her incision may burst. Luckily, it didn't and her surgeon decided she should quit the warfarin. She didn't have that type of reaction when she took warfarin after the blood clot behind her knee and her surgeon said that knees rarely do that because they don't have as much tissue and muscle around them where the blood and fluid can settle. In any case, she is slowly getting better as the body absorbs the blood/fluid. It's a slow process and she is just now approaching walking with only a cane instead of a walker.

Interesting, mulegolf. Warfarin has kept me alive for the past six years - DVT from too many long road trips. Don't know if I want to sacrifice the ole rat poison for any extended period.

Well, went to the specialist this morning. Went over my xrays with me. Total hip replacement on tap.

Headed to the hospital in a few for doppler scan on my leg. They think I have a dvt in my right leg (not the 1st time). Started gut injections yesterday.
I've had this done a few times so nothing new, but I lost a good friend in February. While having said scan done, they broke loose a clot and he died right on the table.

Positive thoughts headed your way. You can manage a couple more months to get the dvt taken care of, then a better quality of life awaits once they get your new hip installed.
