Belt Sander Feedback

Ok, looking for some feedback my friends. Years ago when I was more involved in club fitting and repair, I used a 1x30 little belt sander and had a variety of belts for steel and graphite tip abrasion, ferrules, etc.

What are you all using today and where have you bought your items from?

I just do work for myself and occasionally for my buds so I do it all by hand. I abraid shafts with small strips of plumbers sanding cloth in a vice clamp. I use a "shoe shine" motion and turn it a couple of time. For ferrules I generally try to order ferrules that are close to what I will need in OD. If they need turning I put them in a vice clamp and buff them with a cloth soaked in acetone. You can also use an old leather belt with acetone.

I find Golfworks ferrules are the best made.
Thicker plastic, imo.
Like Rick, I do everything by hand.
I use an exacto knife for graphite shafts. Sandpaper for steel only.
If I decide to turn a ferrule, I use nail polish remover and an old smooth rag.
Acetone is too stinky for my apartment (and the wife)

I use this bad boy with a 150 grit belt. Picked it up used 10 years ago and it is still going strong. I only use this for tip prep. Like Spuzz I use nail polish remover and a piece of old T-shirt to turn my ferrules by hand.

have a similar one , works nicely and with different belt and some compound i keep my fishing knives sharp.

have also uses a hand dremmel with stone bit on steel shafts

turning ferrules is a breeze and tidy up with a little acetone

I still have a little 1X30 belt sander with various belts. I think the sander came from Job Lots like my cheap azz drill press lol. I think the belts were actually from Golfsmith as I bought extras on closeout years ago. Luckily I haven't built much stuff the last 5-6 years.

I have always sucked at making ferrules look really good. My buddies look at the clubs and say they look great, but I cringe at the lack of craftmanship. I did better when I would use little strips of sandpaper and turn them down by hand old school. Still wish someone would make a nice ferrule-less component iron. If someone makes a Ping G25 clone I would buy it lol.

I have this. But, migawd, I never even paid $100 for it, many years ago. The cutoff wheel is kinda mehhh.

Never had a belt sander. I inherited one of these a few months ago though.

It's supposed to be for knife sharpening, but I assume I could use it for other purposes if desired. I don't do high volumes of shafts and so I've always made do with a dremmel and sanding drum.

Thanks everyone! I purchased a $54 1x30 belt sander from Amazon and some belts, ferrules and acetone from Golfworks. 😎 Clearly I was in need of a hobby. Lol

1x42" Durabrite belt. 42" length doesn't turn as at a high rpm as a 30" easier to remove small finesse amounts of ferrule material at a time. I do more than most of you though. Grail Golf mostly for ferrules because I do more volume better pricing.

I've been using these linen belts from Golfworks for years.
The blue Dura Brite felt belts work too, just have to be more cautious

But you need to slow your sander/belt down so as not to burn the plastic ferrule if you get too aggressive.
That's where one of these router speed controls from H/F come in handy.

Then just polish the ferrule with some acetone.

I have two 1X30 belt sanders. I always kept one outfitted with a sanding belt for shaft tip abrasion and the other one with a linen belt for ferrules. I used to get a felt 1X30 felt belt that Dremel had that I used with glanz wax that did wonders for polishing the ferrules as a last step. I haven't been able to find them for years now though.

Look around for a 42" at Harbor Freight. This belt. https://www.golfworks.com/durabrite-felt-ferrule-turning-belt/p/gw1065v/ 42" is preferred not saying 30" won't work but clubmakers that do it for a living use 42's lower rpm. More area to work also (throat of machine). Kinda like reamers and bits. 😀
