So I've tried a few clubs in my hoing over the last 20 years or so. (Been playing for 50+, only hoing for 20 or so). I'm still baffled by how I can take play clubs that "shouldn't" fit me and play well. Today, on a lark I took out the MacG Vfoil forgings with DG300S steel, and a 2007 TM Burner driver and 5w in R flex. None of these clubs should work well for the geezer, but they did.......exceptionally. I was striping the 9.5 degree Burner as long or longer than anything else. The irons felt heavy, but JAYSUS, my swing was right on plane with these. Had as good a round as I could have except for putting. I don't get it. Is fitting just a fine tuning tweak?

sdandrea1 LOL. Have you ever(probably not with where you reside) gone 4-5 months without touching a club, and when you did go out that 1st time, have an all new/different set up in the bag? And shot the same score as you did 4-5 months ago? Hell, I even did that after a 21 yr. LOA.

When a person is good at a skill, it really doesn't really matter much what equipment they use. Your skill allows you to adapt to whatever is in your hands. Look at most sports that use equipment. You going to tell me that Lebron couldn't do what he does with shoes that are 30 years old? Or a race car driver not being able to complete a lap of a track in a better time than me in my ford escape? It is the Indian, not the arrow.

I get both of your points, I do. It's just I expected HUGE difference in playing stiff steel over senior graphite in irons......same with the driver. 9.5 R flex vs 13.5 A flex should have been more difference. in my head anyway.

sdandrea1 I played a round with a set of old Hogan Apex blades a few years ago (about this time of year)
just out of curiousity. I basically sucked with them....lost maybe 2 clubs worth of distance. That was enough of that experiment for me. You must be a SUPERB athlete!!!

That Burner that you played is the exact same one I am currently gaming. Nice club.
I think the flex of the shaft doesn't matter anywhere near as much as most people think it does.

I can't remember who it was but there was a tournament where a tour pro had his clubs lost by the airline and had to borrow clubs and he went out and shot a very low number.

azgreg IIRC, KJ Choi went to GG before a Major Tournament and got a new. set of clubs. He was sensitive enough to detect the build quality of the set. The picked a set that matched Swing weight perfectly across the board. I.E. D2 from 3-PW.

Pretty interesting story.

Not a good player here, but once when visiting my dad I rented some clubs in New Mexico, nice Titleist blades I think, and played one of my better rounds at the time (86 if I remember right). Almost wanted to ask the club how much they'd sell the set for. Having said that, I cannot hit anything with a true stiff shaft in it anymore, although some graphite driver shafts labeled as stiff but seemingly a little loose still work for me.

Does it really matter?? Case in point, clubfitters will puke at this one. We had to go to Charleston, South Carolina for work for a few days. One day we played in the afternoon. Some nice private club that was a customer. Something Dunes was the name. They hooked us up with Callaway XHot rentals. Par 72, never saw the course, The clubs in the bags were mixtures of stiff and regular flex shafts. Some irons in the bag were stiff, some were regular... same with the woods. Anyway, I shot 65. So again... does it really matter?
