Typhoon
Yeah, I think so. My regular playing partner who is likewise a southpaw let me demo his G's before I decided to pull the trigger. He's had them since the early part of the season.
Being somewhat of a Ping loyalist, I was initially pleased with the not-so-bulky appearance at address with a slightly thinner top line. This model, imo, is more of a player's game-improvement shovel, which is right up my alley. Despite his specs being 2ΒΊ upright, I ignored the directional flight of the ball and just primarily focused on feel and shot dispersion. Everything felt incredibly solid, even the few mishits more near the heel. Distance was comparable to the G30's I'm currently playing.
I'd purchased a set of TaylorMade RS1 irons the season they came out. Although I hit them further and reasonably well, there was just an inherited confidence I've always enjoyed with Ping irons, and that obviously translates on the golf course. The RS1's, while perfectly good irons that were easily 7-8 yards longer, were not nearly as forgiving as the G30's I picked up shortly afterward. I figured I would gladly assume the 7-8 yards less difference if it ultimately meant more control and more greens in regulation, which ultimately it did. I mean - there's not that much difference in difficulty hitting a 6-iron versus 7-iron, especially if more forgiveness and control is involved.
I don't know why more players don't play Ping irons, to be honest. I guess maybe it's the stigma of more of a hacker's club??? Dunno... But if we're talking overall performance, which should correlate to better scores, I don't know how it's even a thought. I play with a lot of guys who game Titleist irons (our head pro is a huge Titleist shill and is always pushing the brand) and while they're clean looking and pretty - they just don't have nearly as much forgiveness. I stopped worrying about looks of the iron the moment I started hitting better shots more consistently.
At our level, really, what more is there to want in a reliable golf club?!
Hoping they come in this week!
