are the shits!!
I've been struggling all summer with my hybrids. I've gone thru the Epic Flashs, TM Aeroburner(older), my old standby Acer XVs, a TE Exotics EXS, an older Cobra Bio Cell and the new XDS heads. Failures, for me, and I was always deadly with the Acer XV 5H, for the yardage wanted. I really hated spending a lot of money on more heads, and Maltby does seem overpriced to me. But with everyone on that bandwagon, I jumped on also. Smart move.
Built the 4H & 5H with Mitsubishi Tensei Blue hybrid shafts I'd bought in the Spring, A flex. Wasn't sure how long to make them but looked at the lofts and esp. the lie angles and went with what looked/felt right for me.
I hesitated buying these heads because I thought they kinda looked like the Ping G400 hybrids, esp. with those fins. (website pics are always bad/can't be trusted). They do not look like them at all. They do have the stupid fins, but the leading edge is more rocker style than flat/square, and that is a huge plus, imo. The sole is kinda flat, but nothing like the G400. Face angles are dead square to a bit open, with no offset. Face height is, in my book, perfect...not tall/deep, not shallow. The crown color is black, but in bright light it appears as grey, as it did in the pics. Great looking heads.
The 4H is 21* & the 5H is 24*; replacing heads I use that are 22 & 25, so very similar lofts. The 1st one I hit today went 25 yds.+ farther. The other performed the same way, 25 yds.+ more. The surprising thing was the height they both attained; something I'm not used to in any fw type club. I thought they were moonballs and we're going to be very much short of the expected/intended distances, but traveled much farther than I'd imagined. Cannot really describe the sound as there was no thwack or tink; it was almost like no sound at all. Just swing and ball be gone. Weird.
The main reason I decided to finally buy these was the lie angles. I can't recall seeing hybrids with fw club lie angles, they normally have iron lies. These are both 2* flatter than any I've been using and what a diff that is. They actually play more like a fw club than an iron replacement, and I'm thinking of getting rid of some fw clubs now; these are much easier to hit the same distances(for me). I now wish I had built them another inch longer. I need a 27 * now, but they only make 18, 21, 24.
Did I mention....these are the shits!!
Pics came out crappy, for some reason, but they do look almost exactly like the pics on the GW site, surprisingly.
